How to Save Money at Colonial Park Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have used Colonial Park for many years and they have always been amazing and had great customer service. Today just confirmed that for me. I took my two big dogs to get a vaccine and I had my baby with me. They were so kind and came out and got my dogs out of the car for me, gave them the vaccines, and brought them back so I never had to get my baby out of the car! It was a huge help and relief for an anxious mom trying to figure out how to manage a baby and two large dogs so thank you so much! We love colonial!

They took care of my pup these past few days as he battles a rattlesnake bite. The staff care, they listen, and they have anti-venom on hand. 450$ a vial. Significantly helped my best friend.

This review is a little tough for me to write. Not because I had a bad experience, just more so due to the reason that I had to visit this establishment. First off, the staff was great. They treated me and my furry friend respectfully and were as sympathetic as they could be while staying professional. I visited Colonial Park as a result of one of my beloved cats suffering from an acute illness. Unfortunately, this was the last stop for my buddy, and after a thorough exam and a critical test, he had to be euthanized. 😥 Other than that unfortunate turn of events, my experience there was great. I would not hesitate to return to this facility for future care of my pets or recommend their services to other pet owners. They do great work there.

Really sad to give them this rating, but I’m very upset with the decline I’ve seen here over the last few years. The main reason for this low rating seems to unfortunately be due to the inefficiencies when dealing with the office staff. I’m sure the doctors and nurses are still fine. Recently my dad took his 17 year old dog up there to be seen, and the nurse told him it would be 15-20 min to see a nurse and to see a doctor would be a longer wait. Dad assured her that seeing a nurse was fine for this visit. After he got in the parking lot and called again just to remind them that he was there and fine with seeing a nurse. After waiting an hour in the lot, he called again and they said it would be another hour. Each time he called it was like they had no clue who he was or what was going on. Finally he couldn’t wait anymore because he had another appt and just had to leave. A total waste of 2 hours of his time plus additional stress on the dog. I called up there to discuss boarding options for this same dog, and whoever I spoke to said she would talk to the boarding manager and call me back that same day. She took my name and number. It’s been almost a week, and I haven’t heard back. It just seems their systems or lack there of for servicing customers in the office are not adequate, especially since they do not schedule appointments.

I absolutely love the Colonial Park Veterinary Hospital and the staff. They have taken care of all three of our dogs. Every time we have come in, the staff is always so helpful and welcoming.
