How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was 8 minutes late to an appointment for my dog that had a horrible UTI and was refused care. Been a wellness plan member for 5 years. My dog gets UTIs often so I’m used to bringing in her sample in rather than leaving her there for 6 hours. I had her fresh urine sample (refrigerated) and was refused care because of 8 minutes. I was leaving town the next day and needed her to be seen so I rescheduled an appointment online for an hour later and sat in my car waiting. Got a call 10 minutes before the appointment that the time slot was not actually available and I wasted an hour of my life. The only place that could see her after Banfield screwed me was an ER. I got the BEST care from VEG (south Lamar). Truly incredible place and I highly recommend. The vet did an ultrasound (no charge) and went over that and her UA results with me. Turns out it showed excessive struvite crystals in her urine which can predispose her to more frequent UTIs. The vet at VEG gave me a prescription for urinary diet food to help decrease crystal formation. Something never mentioned or caught after 5 years and multiple UTIs with Banfield. A $600 ER vet bill for a UTI with dog urine I collected MYSELF that Banfield refused to do anything with is worth it for competent care for my dog.

“Bait and Switch Scam at the Worst Time” ⭐ We recently had to make the heartbreaking decision to put our dog to sleep due to age and poor health. When we called ahead, we were told the cost would be $150. After an emotional day of goodbyes with our kids, we arrived at Banfield only to be told the cost was actually $230 because of an added office visit fee. When we questioned the absurd extra charge, the staff literally walked away from my wife mid-conversation and never came back to finish talking. My wife eventually left, with the whole situation unresolved. At such a painful moment, the last thing a family should face is what feels like a bait-and-switch scam. Instead of compassion and clarity, we were met with surprise charges and staff who wouldn’t even stay to address our concerns. Families deserve honesty and empathy in these situations, not misleading pricing and avoidance.

I can not say ENOUGH for Banfield Brodie. My pug is terrified of the vet but the vet techs and doctors there have been so persistent in winning them over - and they have! Especially thanks to Candice and Dr Pocernich. My pug has seizures and they have been so detailed and helpful with helping him get medicated. They also performed bladder stone surgery and everything went perfectly. We take our whole pet family there because we love their care and attention to detail and persistence in working with my pugs. I love them so much!! Thank you Banfield Brodie!

Surprised this place is still open. The doctors are good but how do they choose the front desk people? It is mostly impossible to ever talk to anyone because they are so busy, put you on hold for almost an hour til you hang up then if u go in person, they act like ur not der.

My cat, Figaro, receives excellent care at Banfield. All of the staff are friendly. All seem to care about him and his health. I recommend Banfield as a place for your pets’ health care needs.
