How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would strongly recommend anyone looking for quality veterinary care to be cautious about choosing the Banfield location in Plano. From my experience, the veterinarians here seemed more focused on promoting costly treatments and medications than on providing genuine care or clear explanations. Every question I asked was met with a suggestion for additional (and expensive) exams, rather than helpful guidance or reassurance. If you’re seeking thoughtful, experienced, and compassionate care for your pet, I would suggest exploring other options in the DFW area before committing to this clinic. I truly hope this helps other pet owners make a more informed decision. Probably they aren’t paid well by the corporate so they always find a way to make money by upsell. Front staff is always nice and cheerful

Banfield does NOT care- it’s clear by the reviews that y’all should do something differently. I almost signed up for the wellness plan, but the cold indifference of the vet tech really put me off. The assistant and front desk girl did not seem particularly caring, and the assistant had an extremely fake corporate voice and seemed kind of rude. I personally would not feel comfortable with my cat being left in her hands. She offered me a $22 "pedicure" where my cats claws just get trimmed. It was like a double whammy of being offered a bunch of add-ons and services that might not be necessary, but also with very uncaring people. I even emailed with my concerns and stated that I did not want to leave a bad review, and I never got a reply. Just want to warn others that there are better, less corporatized vets out there that do care.

Please don’t ever take your pets to this Banfield. So much incompetence there. I took my cat in for a suspected UTI. The vet calls me (after my girl had been there for 4 hrs in her carrier) and tells me they could not examine her because she was being uncooperative. This is the second time that has happened there. They recommended giving her gabapentine because they felt her UTI could be caused by “stress”. They were ready to send her home with a prescription to get her to calm down not treat a UTI. I took her immediately to another vet who had no problem, completing an exam, taking a urine sample, and taking an x-ray to make sure there were no crystals in her bladder. And yes, my girl does have a UTI and is being treated for it. She was the perfect angel, even after being traumatized for hours at Plano Banfield. These people should not be treating our animals. I have never written a bad review about any establishment, but these are our babies they are supposed to be taking care of. I wish I could give 0 stars.

I wish i could give NO STARS to this practice and Candase but google wont let me so here is a 1 star for our zero star of the day Candase. The vet was excellent and extremely compassionate in handling my very owner protective dog. The lady Candase at front desk only made things worse. I had to repeat the same information multiple times because she wasn’t paying attention and wasting my time. She looked visibly annoyed, rolling her eyes, and made faces while processing the bill. I had to tell her to explain the bill breakdown and charges which i feel should be done pro actively done. all she was interested in doing was to get me out of there. it was such an uncomfortable experience to deal with her. I have always had the most pleasant interactions at this location with Becca ,Caitlyn and everyone until 04/05/2025. Never come across an awful person like CANDASE at W plano !!!!! While I appreciate the vet’s care and professionalism, it is just frustrating how the rest of the team that day showed a complete lack of empathy, and basic courtesy. I left feeling discriminated and extremely concerned about how other pets might be handled here if they are ignorant about the most important details.

Absolutely unacceptable experience — I will never trust this clinic again. My cat, who is being evaluated for a heart condition (HCM), had to undergo two blood draws because the clinic sent his original sample to the wrong lab and let it expire. That alone is beyond negligent. But what followed was even worse. When we returned for the second blood test — a physically and emotionally difficult process for any cat, let alone one with a heart issue — the vet didn’t even show up. Instead, two inexperienced assistants were sent in to perform the blood draw. They clearly lacked the skill and preparation, struggling to find a vein, and didn’t even bring basic supplies like a pressure pad or bandage. We had to hold our stressed-out cat and wait while they left to find supplies. For a clinic that claims to care about animal health, this showed a complete lack of compassion, training, and professionalism — especially for a cardiac patient. There was zero urgency or care in handling a delicate case. My trust in this clinic is completely gone. You failed my cat, and you failed us. I hope you take this feedback seriously and train your staff properly before another pet is put at risk.
