How to Save Money at McKinney Emergency Veterinary Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First time experience with this clinic. Our grand Corgi had been throwing up and just not feeling well. We were greeted by an extremely friendly lady who immediately put us at ease. In fact everyone here was great. Exam rooms are large, complete with a TV. We were offered coffee while we waited for the exam to be completed. Not having any experience with emergency vets, the prices charged seemed reasonable. An hour later and we were on our way. Highly recommend.

We operate a rescue organization and recently encountered a situation where a very young puppy's health declined. We advised the foster caregiver to humanely euthanize the puppy to prevent further suffering. However, we were unaware that the foster caregiver took the puppy to a veterinarian who was not on our list of approved providers. Despite not having our consent, this veterinarian proceeded with treatment. Unfortunately, this resulted in the puppy enduring prolonged suffering until its eventual passing. Furthermore, we were not informed of the puppy's death by the foster caregiver and had to contact the veterinarian to obtain information about the treatment provided without our authorization. As the owners of the rescue organization, we were never consulted or informed by this veterinarian regarding the care of our dogs. This is absolutely not okay.

I am heartbroken and deeply disappointed with the lack of professionalism and care shown by this clinic in handling the remains of my beloved dog, who was with me for 13 years. I entrusted them to provide private cremation, only to find out later—without any prior notice—that my dog was sent for communal cremation due to their mistake. This meant her ashes were never returned to me, despite my explicit instructions and the signed documents ensuring otherwise. What’s worse, when I went to the clinic to address this, the situation was brushed off as though it was not a big deal, with a casual mention that I would be refunded. This dismissive attitude during such a sensitive and emotional time was absolutely unacceptable. To add to the pain, I had called the morning after leaving her remains to confirm the arrangements, only to later discover they had mishandled everything, showing a complete lack of organization and care. The clinic’s communication was inconsistent, their process disorganized, and their empathy completely absent. Losing a pet is already devastating, and this clinic’s carelessness made an unbearable situation even worse. The clinic never proactively informed me of this mistake—I had to contact them repeatedly just to find out what happened. Even then, their response was filled with excuses and attempts to justify the error rather than a genuine apology or full accountability. I would not wish this experience on anyone, and I urge others to think twice before trusting them with the care of your beloved pets. They need to take accountability for their actions and implement processes to ensure this never happens again. This is not just about a refund—it’s about respect, compassion, and professionalism, all of which were glaringly absent in this case. Their lack of communication, professionalism, and empathy shows poor leadership, and I feel the need to warn others to think carefully before choosing this clinic.

Our 8-month-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel fell ill suddenly, prompting us to seek urgent care late on 4/27. The decision to bring her here turned out to be a lifesaver. The staff promptly assessed her condition and offered us different treatment options, explaining each one thoroughly without any pressure. Ultimately, we opted for her to stay the night, and it was the best decision we could have made. The staff were not only highly competent but also incredibly compassionate, which meant the world to us during such a stressful time. The facility itself was impressively clean and well-maintained. Knowing that our beloved pet was in such capable hands made all the difference, and we're immensely grateful for the exceptional care she received. We wholeheartedly recommend McKinney Emergency Veterinary Clinic to anyone in need of veterinary services. They truly excel in both expertise and empathy, making them the obvious choice for pet owners seeking top-notch care.

The most incredible care team. We brought our precious Lucy in and she ended up needing to stay a couple days. They kept us updated and we felt very assured that she was receiving the best care possible. We love this place and recommend it highly!
