How to Save Money at Animal Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've never had such a compassionate animal hospital take care of my baby boy! I had to drive 2hrs (very fast) to Lubbock to from NM to rush him to another animal hospital whom I wasn't thrilled with, but when he was transferred to the Animal Medical Center, my boyfriend and I were updated every few hours with multiple calls a day. They were so nice and understanding when I asked questions about my dog, and I didn't have to call them once to find out what was going on bc they kept me so up to date with everything. I felt like he was in good hands, and they were giving him pain medication as soon as they were able which was what worried me the most. He seemed so happy when I came to pick him up and I'm so thankful! As long as they're open, I will definitely be coming here again.

Absolutely can't say enough about the quality professional wonderful staff at this place! They volunteer their time and their energy to help and animal shelters and safe homes. Which is where we got our 2 pups from? Well? I should say pups they're adults age 12 and 14. This place is like family they treat us like family, and they treat our 2 furry babies as family. It's just an extension of who we are! We know when we take our fur babies in, they're going to be treated like family with love and care! We trust them completely! Simply the best!

Came for annuals, yearly shots, and some mild concerns for my two cats. This place is chaotic - loose pets, too many people and all different clinic staff that take your pets to different rooms. It seemed like everyone was just in such a rush and stressed out including the staff member who directly worked with my two cats. When Dr. Bailey, the vet, came in she didn’t get to know the cats or myself, she had zero empathy or time. She bluntly said how I was over feeding my cat and kept correcting me when I was trying to explain the food regimen. She should have took the time to just listen, provide education, and explain the affects of overfeeding. Further she should have provided documentation for changes that will be most beneficial, and be a person in the room. Instead I was shamed. I know I am in the wrong about my cats diet, but like many other people, I went off the food bag based on weight. I left with cats who were deeply scared and myself in tears from how overwhelming the whole experience was. The front staff are so helpful and caring, but I won’t be coming back for the reasons above. I get that they are busy, but it’s important to remember to slow down and be a professional.

I love that I can just walk in and quickly be seen here. My dog Max has had quality care from the start, and his surgical procedure went smoothly. Staff called to follow up to see how he was feeling a couple of days later, and they are always friendly and helpful. Great clinic!
