How to Save Money at Texas Avian & Exotic Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is the best vet clinic I have ever patronized. Everyone is so kind and they are really knowledgeable. I drive an hour and a half to get here and it is entirely worth it.

This office has been amazing! Poor Dr. Speckles was a beautiful, fluffy silkie who unfortunately got Fowl Pox and lost her head feathers from scaring. The scabs were all over her head and eyelids and the vet helped me save her and taught me how to tube feed until eventually she cleared up. Six months later, she was pecked in the eye by another hen and was in bad shape. I thought she might lose her eye. After a series of treatments, she healed and was back in the coop again with her flock. I returned today, afraid of wry neck and the vet was so knowledgeable and helpful in looking for the cause rather than treating the symptoms. We moved here a couple years ago and I love that I finally have access to a vet for my chickens. They are my pets and it's hard to find help because a lot of people don't want to spend the money. I understand why. Chickens are hard and can pass without warning. But this office is compassionate and knowledgeable, and have been a stress relief for me many times now!!! You will love the care of your pets here!!

After taking my two cockatiels to this vet for over a year, I found it to be very overpriced and front desk staff to be unwelcoming and unfriendly. Cut to one of my birds passing suddenly in my arms and arriving distraught and crying, the following experience left me angry and disgusted. When I arrived sobbing, my bird was taken back to confirm he had passed. One of the front desk girls approached me and gave me a laminated price sheet to cremate my bird. I simply took it but couldn’t even think about that. Someone came out shortly after to say they were getting a room together to say my goodbyes. The same girl with the price sheet approached me again asking about a decision. I get that I just showed up but it was heartless to talk to me about pricing. Once in the room I was told to press a button when I was ready to release my bird and decide on cremation. Not even 5 mins later the girl was back again! I just pointed at the cremation to get him back but didn’t need all the crazy extras. I was told it was once price. Nearly $250 for a bird was almost as much to cremate my 74lb greyhound. Disgusted and traumatized I handed over my credit card and left. Two weeks go by and no notice about my birds ashes I called and was told they’d been ready, they texted me. I never received a text. And honestly that’s how you notify someone? I immediately asked for the office manager but she wasn’t in. I did get a call from the manager later and explained my experience, frustration and would no longer be a customer. Her statement was that they’ve grown so much they aren’t prepared to handle situations like mine. Mind you I showed up on a weekday during business hours. If you don’t mind overpriced, lacking emotion/uncaring staff and management that obviously care more about their growth, go somewhere else.

I brought my sick chicken here and Dr Bowling and her staff were great! The compassion all of the staff have is outstanding. The office is also very clean and relaxing. Highly recommend this vet office.

We love Texas Avian and Exotic! From the ladies in reception to Dr Schimek, Katelyn, and Sydney, the staff as a whole is amazing! They show their love and passion with each visit, and they show true care and concern! We met them due to an E Cuniculi scare with one of our 2 year old buns a little over a month ago and we have brought her back twice since AND our two newest buns had their initial vet check before we introduced them to our existing fluffle. Our two newest buns had their own special needs to be addressed, and Dr Schimek took her time with each and on follow-up visits, remembers them, and again, cares. It's a vast difference from our annual vaccination vet. They have been able to squeeze us in with short notice, and while the costs may be a little steep, there is a reason, and in our eyes its justifiable. We would gladly and happy recommend them to any exotic pet owners in the DFW area.
