How to Save Money at Oak Hills Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Hill is the most knowledgeable and compassionate veterinarian I’ve ever met! After my 15-year old shepherd mix got grossly misdiagnosed by a different vet and was completely immobilized after a seizure, I brought him to Dr.Hill for a second opinion. I thought it was time to say goodbye to my poor pup. Dr.Hill gave my Cody another lease on life!!!!!!!! With right tests and his vast experience he was able to determine exactly what’s going on with my dog and gave the right meds to being him back to enjoying life! I am eternally grateful to Dr. Hill and his wonderful staff!

We are so fortunate to have found such a kind and knowledgeable doctor in Dr Hill! We are a military family and wish we could stay with him and his clinic forever!! I tell him he is a “walking encyclopedia” because he knows his stuff! I appreciate his knowledge and honesty and ability to be up front - he will not beat around the bush per say. He will present you with options for care and let you know how he would proceed if it were his animals. I find this very helpful in making decisions and we have been able to save money because he does not perform unnecessary care. Megan has also been an absolute angel. She listens to our concerns and makes sure everything is “dress right dress;” for all four of our animals! She has supported us through some difficult times when our babies (and fosters) were sick and has been nothing but patient, always answering all our questions and concerns. I have also had nothing but positive interactions with the rest of the staff. Thank you, all! -Laura, Jose, Anja, Beau, Charley, Scotch & Blanco 😇

Took my dog in to be spayed and walked out of there paying $200 more than I was quoted. Apparently if you pay with Care Credit they add a finance charge-this was never explained to me. I never received a receipt and I have asked for it twice. 1st time I was told my Care Credit receipt was my receipt-2nd time I was told that they would email it-never happened. I called to ask for it again, also told them that my dog was vomiting-She said "You should have opened with that!" Both of the ladies at the front desk are rude. The assistant that took my dog back was informative and professional.

Dr Hill and his staff have always taken such good care of my 5 yorkies! Such a pleasure to know they always treat my kiddos like they are treating their own.

I absolutely love Dr. Hill and his staff. They have been nothing but courteous and professional when I’ve gone in. And I feel like I get educated on animal care when I go in, lol! That’s a plus for me. This is going to sound crazy but I love all my animals. Yes including my chickens. I took one of my babies in because I thought her foot was broken. It would bend backwards and looked painful. Dr. Hill examined her and told me that her problem was from nutritional issues that was causing neuro problems. He treated her in office and gave me recommendations on what type of feed would help best. I immediately went and bought the feed. She has been eating this combo of feeds and she is 100% better! Her foot turned back out and she’s back to normal! You can’t even tell her foot was messed up. She has even gained some weight and she is looking good. Dr.Hill saved my baby chicken! Call me crazy but I love all my animals from my cows to my horses to my dogs to my chickens! Dr. hill will be the place that I get them all treated. He has inherited all my farm animals lol! Thank you Dr.Hill and staff for everything y’all do!
