How to Save Money at Edgefield Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Worked with two docs on our cat's visits and both were great! The vet techs were equally as great, too! Highly recommend going here for any of your pet friends' needs.

My first time here and i was expecting a better experience. Prices are affordable, doctor was ok but front desk staff member can definitely do better customer service. There was this girl writing me a prescription that after i asked a couple of questions she got short and rude even saying ' like i said sir' They can definitely do better with customer service. Will not recommend or visit again.

"Because you don't give up, we won't give up." - Dr. Ali Our "first-born" cat Hammy couldn't eat, pee, poo or walk properly. We took her to Dr. Ali on April 1, and he did a blood test and found out that her kidneys were failing her. She is anemic and has severe arthritis at age 16. He gave us a game plan to follow, and said we may still be able to help her. We couldn't get the supplements he suggested overnighted, so had to make do with what she had -- her kidney rx food, anti-nausea medication, Fe supplement and daily fluids using an IV at home. I never have done that before, but I learned to right away. It was such a stressful time for us trying to obtain those kidney supplements and we felt Hammy was running out of time. Her eyes were sunken. She could not even stand on her own, her body was completely limp, we had to feed her wet food with a syringe. She looked horrible. It was so hard to see her this way. She was peeing herself. We had to anticipate her every need and made sure she was as comfortable as we can possibly make her. I tracked her progress using Google Sheets and shared it with the the team. So from that sad visit, we were basically giving her palliative care and by Friday, she had a seizure, so we scheduled euthanasia on Monday. However, over Saturday and Sunday we noticed some signs of improvement, so we decided to hold off and have her seen for a blood test on Tuesday. To our surprise, Dr. Ali read all the progress notes on Google sheets before the visit. I was impressed by his attention to her care. The blood test showed that she has Stage 4 kidney disease, but her kidney panel normalized. We were relieved, but she wasn't out of the woods yet. Her temperature was very low, so we also had to help her manage her temperature and she was not pooing on her own. Over the next three weeks, we witnessed her progress -- her eyes were back to normal -- big and full -- standing steadily, walking to her favorite spots in our house, jumping up on the couch and beds, having an appetite to eat on her own, drinking water independently, going to the litter box to pee and poo, and getting back to her fiesty self. We are now on week 4 of caring for her and as of this past Friday 4/25, Dr. Ali said, that her heart sounds normal (she was having heart murmurs). And that her kidneys are filtering her blood and fluids. She still has kidney disease but it's being managed. Friday was the first day, we were no longer in limbo. We feel so relieved and so amazed by our little girl's progress. Dr. Ali said it was because of the nursing care we gave and continue to give her. We think that's true, but we couldn't have provided that without his clinical guidance, and his entire team's compassion, attention to detail and care with our weekly checkins and two de-obstipations. We are so deeply grateful for all of them. He said, because you don't give up, we won't give up. That made us cry at the visit. Highly recommend Dr. Ali and his staff. They are attentive, caring, understanding, very competent and kept us informed in a timely manner. We are eternally grateful!

I went in as a walk-in. I was seen immediately, which was so amazing. My dog was able to get checked and x-rays done to see if his leg& hip had any major issues due to him not being able to put weight on it. I am so glad and thankful for the professional staff and doctor who looked at him and took care of him. Thank you so much for being kind.

Around March was time for my boy Kiko to get his annual shots and check up, and we noticed all this time, there was a vet super close. I called and they actually said it could be done the same day, but we were scheduling for another day. I was actually suprised how quick the staff responded to me because I am so used to waiting, haha. They were very polite on the other end too! As for my vet visit, very satisfied. It also helped that for a check up and annual vaccines, I paid less than $100. They also prescribed some eye drops for allergies to concerns i brought up regarding a runny eye. I had to visit again around May because Kiko was vomiting a lot and the Doctor was able to help us get him back to normal, giving him two shots, some medication, and prescribed food for less than $120. I would have paid more elsewhere and probably still have my poor Kiko vomiting, but this vet goes straight to the problem and fixes it! I love that! And to think it was this close to me all this time!
