How to Save Money at East Lake Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Freeman had to move my appointment to the main clinic for my cat so I could be seen sooner. Rich, who works the front, did such a good job and has a great personality. My cat Tank was a little upset with his shots, but is the happiest boy right now because he got to see people other than his brothers or dad, great experience, wouldn't ask for a better staff and doctor. Both the Cat clinic and Main clinic are clean and easy to access, and I don't mind going to either. Great job guys, thanks for making the visit quick and easy!

They killed my chameleon!!! I have pictures and messages saying from the doctor when I dropped them off that he was doing better. He was moving around and everything and After shift change when they told me that it was a new doctor now my chameleon is dead. do not go here even when you show up it smells like dead animals. They are going to kill your animals and still charge you a bill.

we love dr. freeman! she has been very caring for my big dog and treats him well. the only thing is the past couple of times I have had to call in to the vet is that I’m sitting on hold for 20+ minutes to talk to anyone. other than that, our experience here has been great!

Do not use this vet for your beloved pets. I started taking my dog here in 2012 and loved it for the first several years and quality of care plummeted over the past 5 years. Over the years Vets/Techs failed to call me when they said they would while my dog was an urgent patient. I had a vet leave an incredibly vague voicemail right at closing and then was unreachable as she went on out vacation and failed to inform anyone with the information. The last time my dog was hospitalized in July 2025, I had to call several times for updated information hours after they told me they would contact me - I waited for 45 mins for my dog to be discharged and they discharged her and handed her to me with the port still in her leg, I had to inform them and wait another 30 mins for someone to come get her to remove it. They also advertise they provide “24 hour care” which is absolutely not true, they do not have staff onsite for a few days out of the week. I had to ask 3 times for my dogs records to be sent to another vet. Do not trust them with your pets!

I am deeply disappointed to say that the quality of care and service at this establishment has fallen dramatically. I have been a client here for years, but my recent experiences have made it clear that I can no longer recommend them. The most significant change is the departure of Juan Maldonado, who was always my reliable point of contact for any issue or emergency. Since he left, the client experience has plummeted. Scheduling an appointment has become unnecessarily difficult. It is nearly impossible to get in for a timely visit, and dealing with prescription refills has become a complicated, frustrating ordeal that is inconsistent and unreliable. Furthermore, the clinic has apparently discontinued its price matching policy, adding an unexpected and unwelcome increase to the cost of care. It's clear the standard of operation has gone down, and customer convenience is no longer a priority. I am actively searching for a new veterinary practice now and urge other long-time clients to do the same. I do not recommend this location.
