How to Save Money at South 40 Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Exceptional Pet Boarding and Outstanding Service at South 40 Veterinary Hospital I am thrilled to share my incredible experience with South 40 Veterinary Hospital, where the pet boarding service and overall care provided to our beloved pets exceeded all expectations. From the moment we walked through their doors, it was evident that this clinic truly understands the needs of our furry companions. First and foremost, the pet boarding service at South 40 Veterinary Hospital was exceptional. We entrusted our pets to their care, and they went above and beyond to ensure their comfort, safety, and happiness. The boarding facilities were clean, spacious, and well-maintained, providing a comfortable and secure environment for our pets. The staff displayed genuine care and affection towards our animals, and we felt at ease knowing that they were in capable hands. What sets South 40 Veterinary Hospital apart is their outstanding service and the remarkable understanding they have for our pets. Our most crazy dog, Scout, can be challenging to handle. However, Brie, one of the staff members, took extra care to make sure Scout stayed calm and comfortable during his visits. Brie's expertise and compassionate approach in handling Scout were truly commendable. She showed remarkable patience, understanding, and love towards him, making every visit a stress-free experience for both Scout and Echo and us as pet parents. The entire team at South 40 Veterinary Hospital, including the staff and doctors, deserves high praise. Their level of professionalism, knowledge, and dedication to their work is truly admirable. They take the time to listen to our concerns and address them with genuine care and expertise. Every visit to the clinic has been met with warm smiles, friendly conversations, and an overall welcoming atmosphere. I cannot emphasize enough how amazing the staff and doctors at South 40 Veterinary Hospital are. They consistently go above and beyond to provide exceptional service and personalized care to our pets. Their genuine love for animals shines through in every interaction, and it is clear that they treat each pet as if they were their own. In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend South 40 Veterinary Hospital for pet boarding and veterinary services. Their outstanding service, compassionate care, and understanding of our pets' needs make them a cut above the rest. If you're looking for a clinic where your furry friends will be treated with the utmost care and love, South 40 Veterinary Hospital is the place to go. Thank you, South 40 Veterinary Hospital, for your unwavering dedication to our pets' well-being and for setting the standard for excellence in pet care. Sincerely, Margie

We’ve been using South 40 for about 5 years for typically normal routine stuff as well as some teeth cleanings for our smaller pups however we recently had an after hours emergency on a Sunday evening and they were super on top of it and was even able to meet us within an hour of first calling! Our pup had to have some emergency surgery and they did it all right on the spot after calling the emergency hotline and meeting them on site of course. Dr. McCann & Alica are wonderful and such an incredible team! Is South 40 the most affordable vet in town no, are they the most expensive no BUT they do excellent work and they genuinely CARE about their patients and that’s what matters! Our pets are part of our family and truthfully you can’t put a price on that ❤️

Best service in an emergency situation. This vet was the vet that we were able to see about our dogs breathing. He was breathing a lot as if he was exhausted 24/7z we were so grateful they got him in as soon as possible. Unfortunately they did have to break the news to us that had lymphoma after running test and doing everything they could to confirm it. They brought it to our attention in the most sincere way possible which I thank them so much for since this was our first fur baby and we adored him. Both the dad and son saw our dog and were some of the most kindest people and truly care about the animals they see. I would recommend them to anyone. They gave us the best advice and all our options upfront.

South40 is outstanding. The practice was recommended to me by a friend after I adopted a shelter pup. It was my first dog. In three months, they performed follow-up for his heartworm treatment from the shelter, successfully resolved a skin infection he had come home with, fixed a torn cruciate ligament, resolved diarrhea, and are addressing his skin allergies via diet changes and other treatments. This dog has been through a LOT in a short time, but they always make time for appointments, are giving him high level care (who knew there were water treadmills for dogs recovering from leg surgery?), and are transparent about costs and treatment options (i.e., they work with you). They truly CARE about the pets and have been patient with me as a new dog owner, and are never condescending despite my learning curve. The staff has a lot of experience and seem to work as a true team (meaning the vets will defer to each other to get advice on, say, skin issues from one vet, vs. orthopedic issues from a different vet. There do not seem to be egos, but a team environment.) To sum it up, my neighbor told me a few days ago that my dog is "beautiful". The poor thing did not come home looking beautiful, but South40 has made him so. THANK YOU. PS My dog still loves Dr. Gonzalez and Paige more than me (sigh!) but it is a good sign when your pet loves the staff so much!

Dr. Giovanna McCann and the staff that helped us were absolutely amazing. We had a emergency with our English bulldog, Sweet Pea. We sadly lost our sweet girl, but Dr. McCann and staff did everything they could for her. We appreciate the care and comfort we received from them during such a difficult time. We’re forever grateful for all of you!
