How to Save Money at Paz Veterinary South

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Charlie Ann loves her vet, finally! The staff here are all super friendly and helpful when it came to our visit. Charlie scratched her cornea and it was no easy fix! They were very helpful and also gave us a city employee discount! If your dog is nervous or aggressive call ahead because they might give you a room to wait in! All around super affordable and great service.

Prior to recently, I would have given Paz South a 5-star review. I love Dr Thompson and I've used Paz South for 5 years.. while the vets & techs are incredible, I have been very disappointed with the customer service of front desk staff on several occasions lately. Unfortunately they are often the voice & face of the business, and on multiple visits/calls, they have been less than helpful and have been somewhat rude on occasion. I attempted to kindly share my experience in person today, during a very vulnerable and emotional time in my pet's care, and their staff argued with me rather than listening to my concerns. I've recently switched to Paz East - and while it's not the most convenient location for me since I live south, I plan to keep returning - their staff is so kind, accommodating, caring and keeps your personal needs and experiences in mind.

Cozy vibe, pricing higher than other traditional brick and mortar vets in the region, quality of service seems standard but nothing to really write home about. When asked if they offer in home services, which was listed on the door, the vet acted like it was a big headache for them and thus someone I probably won't get great service from for our dogs in that regards. We have 4 dogs and a dog with cancer and had the best mobile vet and traditional vet before moving here; maybe spoiled but really appreciate vets that are super personable and take the time to understand the dynamics of the house, us and our dogs.

I have mixed feelings about this place. On the plus side, everyone I interact with is friendly and professional. The atmosphere doesn't feel like a doctor's office, which is good. It feels very hip and trendy, most likely to keep the dogs calm. I have two dogs and only one goes here. My other dog goes to a vet in downtown Austin that very much has a vet/doctor's office vibe. Despite the atmosphere, my dog hates going. I have to carry her in and hold her the entire time. My other dog who goes to the vet downtown actually likes going and gives the nurses kisses while getting shots. I feel like the experience at Paz doesn't feel polished and is a bit chaotic despite the more modern atmosphere. That's my guess as to why my dog is freaked out by the vet. There's always a lot of waiting, nurses and vets coming in and out of the room, multiple people touching the dog, etc so the experience just isn't streamlined. The dog doesn't know what's going on and gets passed on from person to person. The staff has the right intentions but just needs better execution to make visits calmer for the dogs.

We love the team at Paz. They are always patient and considerate, listening to a first time, dog owners, trials, and tribulations. Dr. Webb is very supportive of our dog Mowgli, and we love the treats that Mali gets on his visits. If you have a new pet or are looking to switch over from your current vet, I would definitely recommend Paz.
