How to Save Money at Austin Pet & Exotic Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I absolutely love this place!!! I have a guinea pig, a tortoise, and a dog and they are all treated with equal consideration when I come in. Dr Mitchell is knowledgeable and takes the time tto thoroughly explains things. They are never pushy with their treatments and their prices are very reasonable compared to my last vet (firehouse). When I lost my guinea pig the staff showed kindness and made me feel so comfortable during his decline- letting me work remotely from the waiting room while he was hospitalized. If you want a vet that truly cares I highly recommend!!!!

They were amazing to me and my 2 boy cats! My cats are only indoor and absolutely hate the vet. This was by far the easiest time bringing them in. The vet was patient, kind, and took her time to explain everything to me. Sara the technician was so sweet when they were feisty. She reassured and kept them calm throughout. She tried multiple times to cut his nails (he’s never allowed anyone to), but I appreciated the effort and attention she gave them. Would definitely come back

I have been here twice now for my Husky who sliced his paw while playing. The cut got infected and was told that he may need to lose that toe nail, but first they put him on an antibiotic and pain medicine, hoping that would do the trick. Well, 5 days later his nail was bleeding again and he's limping. I got the estimate for the surgery and having enrolled in their Thrive pet insurance definitely helps! Everyone is always so nice and welcoming. Ochi's vet comes back with hand-written notes so it's clear he's focused on my pet and thorough. As for the one-star rating, take it with a grain of salt as she gave a tire company a two-star rating solely because they didn't offer oil change appointments.

I had a wonderful experience at this vet clinic with my baby kitten! From the moment we walked in, the receptionist Felicia was warm and welcoming—she got us checked in and taken back quickly, which I really appreciated. Dr. Skellenger was incredibly kind and gentle with my kitten. He took the time to explain everything he was doing during the exam and even showed me how to apply the medication at home. His calm and caring approach really helped ease my nerves during what could have been a stressful visit. A special shout-out to Ricardo, the technician, who was absolutely phenomenal. He handled my kitten with so much care and gentleness—it was clear he really loves what he does. It’s never easy seeing your pet unwell, but the entire team made this visit smooth and reassuring. I’m so grateful for their compassion and professionalism. Highly recommend this clinic to anyone looking for top-notch care for their furry family members!

Office staff and physicians were very professional. Took my puppy who was very ill and having stomach issues the front office staff Felicia I believe quickly took our info and assisted with an accident my Pups had. Dr Mitchell was friendly and saw us in a timely manner. Highly recommend this clinic
