How to Save Money at Honnas Veterinary

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

From the moment I reached out, Dr. Honnas and her team were exceptional. Overwhelmed with distress about my dog's health, I found peace as Dr. Honnas answered my call with immense care and compassion, guiding me through a plan. The clinic visit surpassed all my previous veterinary experiences with its warmth and professionalism. Facing the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize my beloved pup, I am grateful for the compassionate presence of Dr. Honnas and her staff during our last moments together. Scotland was a remarkable dog, and he deserved the exceptional care he received to gently cross the rainbow bridge. I wholeheartedly endorse Dr. Honnas and her team for their unparalleled support and care.

Tonight we thought we had an emergency with our newly adopted fur baby. We called and were able to get an appointment and be seen within the hour. The staff was incredibly reassuring, personable, and knowledgeable. They immediately made us feel at ease and loved on our baby. We had a clean, open room to wait in and constantly had people checking on us. The nurses sat with us and addressed every concern we had. We think Tofu has found her forever vet here at Honnas! ♥️

We went in on Feb 11. Our sweet Happy had not been feeling well that day and we knew something was wrong. Upon arrival we met Robin and Hayden. Two of the most amazing people who helped us that day. We sadly had to say goodbye to our sweet Happy who was with us for about 15 years. Happy was feisty did not like anyone new. I love that Hayden made her feel so comfortable and loved. And it was not just him but all staff. Hayden and Happy created a special bond he held and loved on Happy. We feel grateful because this was a sad moment in our lives. Between Dr. Honnas, Robin, and Hayden we felt so much love, respect, and understanding of what we were facing that day. Thank you for taking care our Happy and helping her in her final moments.

TLDR: My dog swallowed a toy, and they saved him on short notice. The staff is incredibly warm, and I'll be choosing this vet for all future visits. The pricing was fair and accommodating. Recently, my dog ingested a toy, leading to vomiting. After an initial visit and a separate ER with expensive pricing and my dog seeming okay, things worsened on Sunday. Most vet clinics were closed, but Honnas Veterinary came to the rescue. Wendy, their receptionist, scheduled a same-day appointment. The staff welcomed us to a clean and comfortable environment even providing beverages. Dr. Honnas and the team recommended tests and x-rays, providing a fair price. Robin, the technician, was understanding, warm, and communicative throughout this process. The diagnosis revealed a blockage requiring surgery. They started the surgery at 9 pm, allowing me to observe and ensuring my dog's comfort post-anesthesia. Dr. Honnas during the surgery, showed me the blockage caused by a piece of a stuffed dinosaur, showed me how my dogs intestines were bruised, and recommended overnight observation. The staff was supportive, even accommodating my girlfriend and her dog in a warm room. A clean dog park is located behind the clinic across the street. The next morning, they reported his good condition and provided helpful advice. My dog was immediately back to his old self. They worked with me on payment, refunded money that i had payed with an alternate card, and facilitated the Care Credit process for me! A minor issue post-surgery was promptly addressed free of charge. This clinic stands out as the best I've encountered, and I highly recommend it for their warm and accommodating staff. I'm grateful for the excellent care they provided to my dog.

Dr Honnas is hands down the best vet we've found for our cats! She saved the life of our little fur girl when she nearly died from acute pancreatitis. And she has kept her absolutely thriving and well since then through many flare ups that are so common with chronic pancreatitis.. Dr Honnas embodies that rare, priceless blend of compassion and exceptional expertise. She is trustworthy in her knowledge, helping you make the best decisions for your pet's health and has a warm, gentle bedside manner with owners and pets alike that doesn't stress you or your pets further when they come to see her. We love Dr Honnas and will always trust her with all our pet's care. Once you meet her you will never want another vet again. 💜
