How to Save Money at Highland's Pet Medical Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have trusted Highland's Pet Medical Clinic for over 20 years with my cats and dogs. They are an Austin original on the edge of Enfield. The vet techs are especially kind and thoughtful. Dr. Pankonien is incredible and knowledgeable. Most of my appointments are with the techs for nail trims or the occasional allergy shot for my dog. The online portal is quick to make an appointment - and I really never have to wait. For the first time ever, I let her put my dog, Baby, under for a teeth cleaning. Wow! I got back pages of data on every tooth and what she found, what she did, and even full color photos of before and after! Her teeth are whiter than mine! She found some bone loss issues but did not remove any teeth at this time. I love that she is conservative in her approach. Baby had a little tiny growth on her eyelid, and we decided to remove it and have it tested. She told me how she improvised with special tools on the fly to get under the eyelid safely in order to cut it out on top safely. The stitches are tiny and have healed well. She also saw a bit of skin under her eyelid that looked suspicious so she scraped it off to be safe. I feel like my precious dog was in such great hands the whole time. I received an email when I got home of everything they did and advice moving forward on her care, as well as a goodie bag of samples to try and a doggy toothbrush and toothpaste to try. The prices are fair. I never feel I am taken advantage of. When I returned a few weeks later to remove the stitches from her eye - the lab results from the biopsy had returned and it was a low level of cancer! Luckily, my wonderful vet had removed a clean area all around it, and my dog is safe. I am so grateful. I trust them and I will continue to take my pets there.

I have to give credit, where credit is due. I just recently went for the first time with my cat Daisy, who actually my daughter highly recommended them. Daisy is not doing well due to her age. (16) When I first called, the receptionist was very pleasant and I was able to get a same day appointment. I was greeted with the veterinarian assistant Zach, who I found to be very nice, pleasant, and very thorough with all his questions and the assistance that he gave to Daisy and I. He had a beautiful warm bed side manner. He was very quick and efficient with everything that I needed! I found the veterinarian Nicole to be far the best! She took her time, and explained everything to me and all my options. The love and care she gave Daisy and I was was very heartfelt. I thought I was going to have to have Daisy euthanized but Nicole gave me other options that may help and so far with her treatment that she prescribed is working very well and Daisy is up and walking again, eating and feeling a lot better. I am not sure of the time frame that I will have with Daisy, but Nicole gave me extended time with her and I will also treasure those days. I am thankful so far that Daisy is having a much better happy ending on her last chapter and so am I. I highly recommend Highlands Pet Medical Clinic and 5 Star to all!! Thank you for the love you give to animals, God Bless!

We’ve been bringing our pets to Highlands Pet Medical for the past 2–3 years, and I can confidently say this is the best veterinary team we’ve ever worked with. What started with just one dog has now grown into a full fur family of three—and Highlands has been there for us every step of the way. With dogs in completely different life stages—our oldest is 11, our youngest just 1—it’s been such a relief having a vet team that understands and tailors their care to each of their individual needs. Whether it’s senior wellness support, routine care for our middle pup, or puppy visits and vaccinations, they’ve handled everything with professionalism, compassion, and true attention to detail. We’re incredibly grateful for their ongoing guidance, gentle approach, and how they always treat our dogs like family. Highly recommend Highlands Pet Medical to anyone looking for thoughtful, reliable, and personalized veterinary care. They’ve earned our trust for the long haul! 🐾

We’ve been coming to Highland’s since 2012 and Jan has always been there and super friendly. He’s taken good care of both of our beagles from puppy to adulthood and is part of the reason we still visit Highland’s. A lot has changed over the years, but Jan’s friendliness and the rest of the team’s professionalism has persisted.
