How to Save Money at Buffalo Gap Road Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very happy with the service, communication, and knowledge! I was a little hesitant trying this clinic because of the 3.5 star rating. But I called since my ferret was sick and nobody else wanted to see him. Unfortunately, my ferret ended up passing away before I could get in the car. But I liked the uncomplicated and friendly service I received on the phone, so I took my poodle here a couple months after my ferret passed. The dog had a lump on his belly. Dr. Hitchcock got us in the same day to do an exam. Two days later we were back to operate. Everything went well, my dog healed up beautifully. Dr. Hitchcock even called post op to check on him. On top of that, they only charged me $260 for everything, including exam, operating, and a week long antibiotics regime.

Dr. Hitchcock is AWESOME. Very practical and knowledgeable. He communicates very directly with you about your animal and addresses concerns. Little to no wait time at all for appointments, and very reasonable cost $ for care for neutering and shots for our two cats. Definitely recommend!

We needed someone local who could trim our Conure’s beak and claws and after calling a lot of places, this is where we were eventually sent. I called and was able to get in right away and he did a great job and now our bird can eat and sleep comfortably without his beak interfering. We’ll be going back as needed now.

My elderly chihuahua mix (10 years old) was attacked by a large dog on a Friday morning. I called everywhere to see who could take her and also would accept a payment plan as I hadn’t gotten my check yet. He assured me that he took payment plans and to go ahead and bring her in. When I came in I was told to go weigh my dog myself, which really wasn’t a problem, then when I was asked for my information he was very short and was rushing me, also not too big of a deal. Then, as my dog is sitting on the exam table with two large gashes in her neck that are dripping blood everywhere, he looks at her paws instead and says “Her nails need to be cut too.” Yes, my dogs nails get long, it’s been a problem her whole life, I admit it’s a hassle cutting them and since she’s old I just let it slide a lot. BUT SHES HERE FOR TRAUMA TO HER NECK, SHE IS LEAKING LIKE A FAUCET ON YOUR TABLE. When we finally take her to the back, he has me put her in a kennel with a piece of newspaper down and says she’ll be ready this evening. No time, so I assume he’ll call me, vets always do. He calls me right before closing and says “Are you coming to get your dog?” Yes, I didn’t know she was ready but I’m on my way. He then asks if I have any money to put towards the bill. I say “No sir, I explained to you before I arrived that I get paid tomorrow, I wouldn’t be able to pay you today. I have $10 to my name.” He then laughs at me and says “We’ll then you can come pick her up in the morning and hangs up. Long story short, I paid $200 for my dog to simply be sewn up. She was filthy when I got her back, still covered in her own blood, her collar hadn’t even been removed (mind you she has some pretty serious neck wounds), and she has clearly urinated on herself, I could smell it. He only sent me home with 6 antibiotic pills, no pain relievers, no cone, nothing. Now, 6 days later, I’ve had to take her to ANOTHER vet and spend $400 more to be told she has an abscess and her wounds are now infected. Sorry, but 0/10 do NOT recommend this vet.

Absolutely love this place!! Was recommended by a friend. He’s so nice and friendly, took great care of my 9 year old dog and my 2 year old bird. Got in super quickly. So glad I’m established here, I know if I have an emergency I’ll be in great hands. Only place in Abilene I’ve found that takes birds and is still accepting new patients. Said he only charges for what he has too and it was significantly less than everywhere else in Abilene, couldn’t be happier.
