How to Save Money at Aberlea Veterinary Life Planning, LLC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot begin to fully articulate just how wonderful this practice truly is! Dr. Lane, Mrs. Margaret, and Ms. Madeline are all exceptional and make a team that everyone would be blessed to have caring for the 4 legged babies in their families! Dr. Lane treats both your pets and you as if they are an extension of his own family! Beyond grateful for everyone at Aberlea! ❤️ *the photo is of our sweet GSD. She looks sad, but she has sad eyes most always… BUT this is the FIRST Practice that I have not had to fight to get her to walk inside. She goes joyfully into Aberela!

Dr. Lane at Aberlea is absolutely the best veterinarian in Murfreesboro. Our oldest dog was 10 when we switched so we have been to other vet offices in the area. I have never felt so good about the health of my current two dogs. Dr. Lane educates me on anything going on with my dogs and we make decisions together. Dr. Lane is passionate about keeping your pets on a healthy visit schedule so when they are sick he has a good baseline to compare. My dogs also love going there. Their tails wag when we are there and they seem at ease. Before, at other offices they were scared and would hide under my legs. I would highly recommend Aberlea!

I would give 6 stars! Hahah I absolutely adore the staff and Dr. Lane! They will take the time to explain everything to you. Dr Lane never gets annoyed with questions and will make sure I understand how and why we're doing what we're doing. They all know us by name. I feel like they truly care about our pets. They make it feel like a comfortable and cozy place. I absolutely love that their vet's office has an open floor plan. They're never taking an animal "into the back" where you can't see what's going on. I think that's one of the coolest things about this building that I never expected to see. I'm very grateful for all of them and I've moved all of my animal care to their office and I will continue to stay there. I used to be one that only brought my animals and when something was wrong. Because frankly vet care is expensive. But I appreciate the the structure that they have set up here. And after talking it through it makes a lot of sense to me. They have annual care plans but of course you could just pay by the visit. But Dr. Lane really needs to get to know my animals when they're feeling well so that he can understand them better when they're not feeling well, and by seeing them when they're well we may prevent them from having anything worse happen. 😊 Which makes sense. You have to have a little bit of comparison. They are always so accommodating and kind and when I first brought in my pets it was all because there was something going on. But they've encouraged me to set up continued care even when they're well and I feel comfortable and happy spending the money knowing that the staff here are really thinking about the quality of life for my pet.

I can’t say enough great things about Aberlea, Matt, and the whole team. From the moment you walk in, you feel like your pets are part of their family. The entire team is incredibly personable, always available when you need them, and truly cares about the well-being of every animal they treat. Unlike some places, they never overcharge or push unnecessary treatments—just honest, compassionate care. It’s clear they love what they do, and it shows in the way they treat both pets and their owners. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a vet who genuinely puts animals first!

I have had many veterinarians for my dogs throughout my life, and in many different parts of the country and this group is by far the best. When it comes to being friendly and compassionate they have been second to none. Dr. Lane is great at what he does and is able to convey what is going on with your pet in a way that's easy to understand. I have and would entrust him with my most loved furry family member. Thank you Dr. Lane and staff!
