How to Save Money at Carolina Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very nice and accommodating. Unfortunately our dog had taken a turn for the worse and our Veterinarian was closed. We took our dog here to get evaluated. Everyone was easy to deal with and wanted the best for us and our dog. They took very good care of our dog and made sure our family was fine through the process. Unfortunately we had to have her put down the worst part of being a pet owner. Great people. Thank you.

Would not personally recommend for surgery. I felt like he seemed overly confident that surgery would go well on a sick dog and we did not think to get a second opinion. Surgery subsequently did not go well. Did not have consistent aftercare available in the ICU - We were told the day after surgery that they may not have someone to watch our dog overnight again. That in and of itself was stressful to think that post surgical care was not guaranteed to be available. We were eventually sent home with a very sick dog, possible internal bleeding and with a very large, tight incision. We felt like follow-ups were minimal including when we ended up at another emergency vet for a surgery complication within 48 hours of leaving this Rock Hill location. I felt like the surgeon did not support us with that complication. Dog died within a week of initial surgery with Dr Mertens. Separating the fact that we lost a family member, and even before we ended up at the ER vet, our experiences were unimpressive. I would never, ever go through another surgery or recommend one at this location based off of our experiences. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Dr Mertens has significantly given our English Lab a better quality of life. He had a luxating patella and chips in his elbows as a young dog. Winston is able to walk and enjoy playing compared to barely walking with a knee cap that was popping out. Dr. Mertens is very personable and I was told by other vets is the surgeons bring their dogs to get surgery.

Very caring staff, we’ve been here a few times now and have never had a bad experience. Sometimes there may be a long wait for emergencies because they go in order by who is most critical. Regardless of when you get there you could be pushed back if a more serious case comes in. They’ve been very helpful whenever we come across an animal that needs emergency medical attention or if our own pets need to be seen when our primary vet is closed. The staff has always been very compassionate and gentle with the animals we bring in. You can tell they truly care about the work they’re doing.

Had to take my 12 year old Jack Russel in at 6am for frequent seizures. CVS got us right in and walked me through the process. Within minutes I was speaking to Dr. Derrich Phillips who was personable, professional, knowledgeable and kind. He understood my situation and took his time to talk me through best and worst case scenarios. I genuinely felt as if he was approaching/advising the situation as if he were in my shoes, which was much appreciated. Would highly recommend.
