How to Save Money at Hartsville Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've always had good experiences here with all my animals. The love and compassion all the staff have for animals is amazing. All my babies have been well cared for here and got in right away.

Rude staff, terrible service. I called last week to schedule for a 1 year old to be neutered. He was a stray who we finally got to come to us. I was told I had to schedule a consult first and the vet would do an exam and schedule the surgery for whenever is convenient for me. I asked prices and was told I would get an estimate. When I got there, a woman came in, didn't identify herself and asked if I wanted vaccinations today too. I told her I was told today was just a consult. She said by law they have to do vaccinations with the surgery when scheduled. I said "all vaccinations?". She said "yes". Then said "at least the rabies but you need to talk to the vet. " The vet came in and we discussed surgery, did an exam and said she would give me an estimate. The woman who said my cat had to be vaccinated, came in and gave me an estimate. I was told to schedule at the front window. The girl behind the counter scheduled the appointment and said it was $50 for today and is required as a down payment prior to surgery. I said I was told today was only a consult. She got an attitude and said "well, when you don't ask questions". I said "excuse me, did you say it's my fault because I didn't ask questions?". I reiterated that should have been told when I called to schedule the appointment and before my cat saw the vet! She was rude and walked off. I left. A friend recommended Sandy Memorial. MUCH cheaper and you don't have to schedule a consult first and the cat doesn't have to stay the night. You have to pay a small deposit that is refunded after the surgery.

All of the doctors and staff at HAH have always been friendly and courteous. I take both my cat and my dog to them and have never had a bad experience, however, my cat is 10 and has had some concerning health issues this past year. The staff at HAH have always been quick to get him in the door and provide whatever care necessary- they've answered all of my questions and phone calls without ever making me feel overbearing and have gone above and beyond to find answers and get him back to good health. I cannot express enough gratitude for what they've done for my little man, and will continue to trust them to care for all of our fur babies.

This was my first time bringing one of my pets to Hartsville Animal Hospital and it won’t be my last. The staff were so friendly and loving with my little kitten and answered every question I had. It was an absolute plus that they accept care credit too. I will definitely be going back with my fur kids.

Dr.Tochiki, Dr.Sponseller and Dr. Riddle are all Excellent, compassionate and skilled in all the most current treatments and procedures. I have taken my German Shepherd there for 5 years. Never had any problems with anything. Caring staff at the front desk ( Shianne whom I deal with the most ) and 110% Wonderful Vet Tech ( Leelee) whom Zeus trust enough to get him out of the car and bring him into the building.
