How to Save Money at Pennsylvania Animal Wellness and Surgery

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Roman and his staff are superb! The TPLO surgery he did on our dog was an absolute success! Can’t thank them enough or give them enough stars!

Very happy to be with this practice! The facility is clean and modern, the access to advanced diagnostics is great and the staff is fantastic. We are crazy cat parents with a clowder of 8, and our 15 y/o male had a sudden decline with his chronic vomiting. Dr. Fowkes is so empathetic, knowledgeable, transparent and thorough with testing. We finally got a diagnosis and treatment plan to manage his symptoms and he's doing so well ❤️‍🩹 They're great for regular well visits, allowing us to bring all 4 1 y/o's together for vaccines/check ups, so no post vet bullying since they all smell the same way 😸 The on-site meds offered are super convenient. A new addition with little backstory was really struggling to integrate, and Dr. Fowkes spent the time to review all the things we had tried and watched a video I had to see what I meant and got our spicy girl started on anti anxiety meds that have been LIFE CHANGING for all of us. My husband's 6 y/o baby girl cat who is never a problem, had a sudden episode and the staff made sure we were seen ASAP. Again, the advanced diagnostics of same day blood work and an X-ray were so reassuring to have. The techs have all been so pleasant and competent, with great patient and communication skills. The front office staff is very helpful, from scheduling to med questions and refills, to checking in and out. The location is very easy to access with plenty of parking and cost is very reasonable and comparable; I have always been well informed about cost estimates for additional services. Can't say thank you enough to Dr. Fowkes and the rest of the team for keeping "the babies" happy and healthy! 💚

UPDATE to my post following their response : So what if I couldn’t find a vet to take my cat that day? She would have died. I’d be the first to understand a phone call to cancel my appointment for a routine visit if it meant saving the life of another pet. I understand not everyone feels that way but I wanted to make it well known this was our experience with your office. I loved PAWS until I called on a Monday morning begging them to perform surgery on my 1 year old cat with a bowel obstruction. The Pittsburgh animal hospital was so overwhelmed with surgery cases that they recommended I call my own vet and transfer her. Pennsylvania Animal Wellness and Surgery said no, they couldn’t. I was heartbroken. They called me a few days later inquiring on the health of my cat. No thanks to them-she’s alive and well. Thankfully I found another emergency vet willing to take her. Needless to say we transferred our care to the best vet ever in North Huntington.

I recently had my Great Dane, Hook, there for an assisted laprascopic gastropexy. The staff was very pleasant and welcoming. Dr. LAMBERSKI was very personable and knowledgeable. Hook walked out of the clinic the same day and was back to his old self the following day. I was glad that my vet recommended PAWS for this procedure.

Like Dr Ashley a lot . Was referred by my friend Amanda. Glad we came. Our 3 dogs are treated well. Prices are a bit higher than other vets we have been too , so I would give them 4-1/2 stars. But otherwise excellent. Weve had two VERY bad experiences with another vet in Greensburg. They did a surgery on him and did not cut out the tumors that were circled on a photo diagram of my dog and described in detail on his surgery sheet. Literally cut him in other places where no tumors existed. And years ago my other dog who lived till 16 was cut open by a vet for a spay. She was already spayed at 6 months old. I think she was 8?? She was only there for a dental cleaning. Horrible. I’m super critical of care we receive now for sure!!
