How to Save Money at Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital and Pet Resort

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Doc Hicks has been our Vet for 20 plus years for many Scotties we've owned and bred. He's straight up the best I've ever worked with in 45 years of owning and breeding dogs and his staff is always patient and kind with our dogs.. and me haha 😀 5 star recommend!!

Have been taking my dog to get groomed here - and for the occasional vaccination - since he was a puppy. They always do a great job and the staff are very friendly. Recently there was a miscommunication on the type of cut that was given, they were super accommodating in resolving things and fit us back in the schedule just a day later. Highly recommend!

Had been going here for more than 5 years and spent thousands of dollars. While things started out good, they went downhill for us. Very difficult to get in person appointments and instead they tend to do mostly drop off appointments. Anytime we've been able to get an in person appointment our senior dog was fine but apparently gets "very aggressive" when left for drop off appointments. Which I find very difficult to believe, but even if that's the case then maybe try to get us in person appointments? The biggest problem though is the front desk staff. High turnover for starters but the current crew likes to play gatekeeper and has no concept of customer service. Our puppy was due for their second set of shots and they were unwilling to accept our vet records from out of state. The excuse was initially that they were from a breeder, when I was able to show they were from an actual vet the excuse switched to that they weren't verified/signed by the vet. (Could have easily called the vet). Also was told if even a day late we would have to start over. According to Google and our new vet that's total nonsense. The front desk just likes to be difficult. When they knew I was upset you would think they would try and make me feel better right? Nope. When I said I was thinking about canceling and going somewhere else their exact words were "ok so you want to cancel? Have a nice day." You would think they would try to find out why they lost a longtime client but they simply don't care. The new vet had no problem with our records and said you always have a few extra days to get your shots. Now that we see how good a vet experience can be, it's been quite eye opening. Akron-Medina veterinary charges Lexus prices but provides Yugo level service.

My dog is a new patient. It was a real pleasure talking with the doctor, he was very patient explaining everything we needed to know and took tine answering all our questions. Couple of days after the appointment, they called us to ask about the dog, if he is doing good with the treatment, definitely recommend. We also have an appointment to their grooming saloon
