How to Save Money at The Dog & Cat Doctor

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Engle and his staff took care of my 2 cats for 16 years and gave them the best care I could ever ask for . I had to put them both down last week 2 days apart I'm in Florida now but the Dr and his staff were so kind as to send me cards of sympathy to witch I will be ever great full. If I was still in ny I wouldn't go anywhere else for my animals care. DONNA and John Keffas

I have been taking my dogs to Dr. Galina for many years now. She is knowledgeable and a caring doctor. The entire staff is very pleasant. Highly recommended veterinarian and clinic.

They love to offer extra tests and things your pet does not really need, as long as they can charge you more. If you don't do your own research prior from bringing your loved one 🐾 here you may end up paying much more for unnecessary services. Front desk is very unorganized, the vet Andrew Engel should retired. All he sees in you and your pet is a big $$$$ sign. He's careless and should give new vets the chance to actually care for our pets, not just his pocket. And if you ever need Health Certificate for your pet to take him/her with you to travel abroad, DO NOT COME HERE!!! They are the worst facility to take your pet for that, they would make you waste your time and money. They do not know what they must do. They made me miss my flight and ruined my holiday vacation last December after they charged me over $400 and assured me that everything was ready for me to travel. On top of that two days later after not being able to travel anywhere i went back to the office, spoke with the vet and asked for an explanation as of what they didn't know what they were supposed to do and I asked for a refund and then he said to me "the only way I would give you your money back is if you take me to court". What a careless, unprofessional, greedy individual he is, total disappointment! The only reason I gave them a star is because before you send your dog in they print out a paper with all the tests and things that they want to run on your pet and you have the right to decline to those that you don't feel like your pet needs so that your bill doesn't end up being extremely expensive. Lately pets' owners are not allowed to go in with their pets during their treatments, God knows if they actually do proper treatment inside. I thought it was a covid precaution but then they let you in after and you realize nobody wears a mask so it doesn't make any sense not to let you in when your pet is being seen.

I had a great experience getting a general checkup for my German shepherd puppy. The doctor took her time answering all questions and checked up on us a week later. She seems very knowledgeable and passionate about canine wellbeing. I recommend her to other dog owners in the area.

I really wanted to like this place, the service was nice but after my last two visits I wont be coming back. I rescued a kitten last week and came for a check up to make sure she was healthy. When I brought her in they were very compassionate, Dr. Galina seemed promising and told me she was fully healthy, and shocked she had no flees. She gave her deworming medicine, clipped her nails, stated she was 5 weeks old and gave me tips as a first time cat owner. I believe they made an honest mistake with the age. The kitten is at least 7 weeks old based on her teeth growth and behavior. The fact that shes underweight would likely explain the mistake made but this was only the tip of the iceberg. I came home and two days later find flees all over her face and stomach…I called them for advice and they said its normal to miss and to just use dawn dish soap and a comb. I called an animal hospital for more detailed help and thankfully they recommended 1/4 dose of capstar. which worked immediately. I made a follow up appointment this Friday 8/27/21 because I also noticed on Wednesday that my kitty had symptoms of coughing, sneezing, nasal congestion, twitching, sensitivity to light, and drowsiness. I was extremely worried like any owner would be. After she got examined they reassured me that she was perfectly healthy AGAIN. Dr. Engel basically told me everything I wanted to hear, charged me for doing nothing, and sent me home. I am greatly disappointed with the help I received and recommend you save your money and go to google for some answers. These extra expenses would have been completely avoided if these issues would have been found during the first check up.
