How to Save Money at Rivergate Veterinary Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve trusted Rivergate Veterinary Clinic with my furry family for over 15 years, and returning to them felt like coming home. My journey with Rivergate started with my first dog, Gelybean. They were incredible throughout her life. When she was a puppy I thought she was going to die; she had kennel cough that would not go away and other issues that needed treatment. But Dr. Kross' team fought for her and saved her. When she passed two years ago, it was a profound loss, and after moving downtown, I hadn't been back. Six months ago, I welcomed a new Maltipoo puppy, Eevi. Wanting a vet closer to my home in Soho, I tried a new clinic. It was a traumatic experience for both of us. The staff was careless, dropping Eevi not once, but twice. The second time, they took her to the back room, and when she returned, she couldn't walk. We ended up at the emergency vet that night. After a subsequent visit for a rabies shot, she was a different dog for over a week—withdrawn, not playful, and flinching when anyone touched her paws. My happy puppy was scared and hurting. That’s when I knew I had to go back to Rivergate. The difference was night and day. From the moment we walked in, the staff was so gentle and calm. Eevi, who usually shakes uncontrollably at the vet, was noticeably more relaxed. Dr. Sue was amazing with her, handling her with such care and patience that I could actually see Eevi begin to trust again. I don't care that I have to travel from Soho to Midtown. The peace of mind, the exceptional care, and the genuine compassion are worth the trip. Rivergate isn't just a veterinary clinic; they are like family. They have been wonderful to both of my dogs, through the entire lifecycle. If you want a vet who will treat your pet with the love and respect they deserve, look no further than Rivergate Veterinary Clinic. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

I wish I could give more stars. Dr. Eve and the whole team at Rivergate are so amazing. Thorough, caring, kind, knowledgable and comprehensive. They took really great care of our dog who is terrified of vets for a dental cleaning and extraction and gave great aftercare guidance and recommendations for ongoing dental care. Prices are amazing compared to other places in the city with superior service. I have recommended them to everyone I know with a dog.

After months of trying to treat my cat’s strange breathing problems and more recent Horner’s syndrome, I took my cat here for an internal medicine consult with Dr. Ferreri and Alyssa. They were both deeply kind and courteous. They thoroughly examined and explained the existing documentation + considered all the possibilities given my boy’s medical history. Best yet, they explained the reasoning behind treatment decisions both past and present. I found this last bit very reassuring (in spite of my chronic worries as a pet parent). If you’re in doubt, don’t be!! This is definitely the place.

I’ve been going to Dr. Kross for well over 30 years. Taking care of my beloved pets from the beginning of their life to their end. He’s the most knowledgeable, compassionate and caring veterinarian I’ve ever been to. I wouldn’t take my precious fur babies to anyone else! And my pet can sense how special and loving he is and immediately warm up to him.

Cannot recommend this place. While the vets themselves are very nice, there were a lot of things that left a terrible impression on me. Despite spending thousands over the summer to see them and seeing them the week before my pet passed, I heard nothing from them. They must've known because the ER vet said they'd inform them, I called them the day of to cancel pre-scheduled appointments, and I went in person to return the subt fluids. But not only that, I repeatedly received reminders for a checkup appointment. When I emailed them about this, I received the most generic response without any apology (see screenshot) When my pet got sick right before I had to travel, I asked about logistics because I needed to urgently figure out if I had to cancel my travels or find a sitter to stay overnight. The vet nonchalantly mentioned that due to my pet's age maybe he'll get worse and need to be put down before my travel. I couldn't believe what the vet had just said. The communication is terrible. It's common that the clinic doesn't pick up when you call, so you just repeatedly have to call. When I was out of the country and couldn't take a call, they told me they'd email me about test results. I received that email a week and a half after the tests.
