How to Save Money at Animal General
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Animal General is lovely, caring, expert veterinary practice on the Upper West Side. Dr. Chiverton is a caring and attentive veterinarian, attending to Layla's anxiety and my concerns about her wellness. We had a wonderful check in for Layla's 14th birthday. All is well, and though we love Dr. Chiverton, we hope not to see her soon. :-)

I’ve been bringing my dachshund to Animal General for years, and my recent experiences with Dr. Chiverton and the team have been exceptional. They are incredibly caring, thoughtful, and always looking ahead to minimize stress for both pets and owners. The communication is clear and honest there are never any surprises with billing, and they never push unnecessary treatments. The clinic itself is also a pleasure: the street is beautiful, the waiting area is spacious (so no crowding with other dogs), and wait times are consistently short. My dog has a history of IVDD surgery, and the team has handled her with such careful attention through her echocardiogram, and soon, her dental work. I’m grateful to have all her care managed in one place by familiar, trusted faces. I feel completely safe bringing my dog here, and I look forward to continuing with Dr. Chiverton and Animal General for as long as we’re in New York. Truly one of the best veterinary teams we’ve ever had!

We have been seeing Dr. Shea with our Bernese Mountain Dogs for over 15 years. She is a gifted clinician and diagnostician, a kind and compassionate person, and someone who genuinely cares far beyond the confines of her role. She is an "old school" practitioner -- someone who discourages care that isn't needed, gives you "real talk," and is available whenever you need her for questions large and small. That combination of authenticity, bedside manner, and gifted care is unusual in human medicine let alone animal medicine. The other vets in the practice including Drs Chiverton and and Geer are also excellent doctors. Bernese Mountain Dogs are not easy to care for -- they are oversized, anxious and prone to very bad decision-making (our last guy was known as the "Sesame Street" dog because he scarfed down so many of our kids' stuffed animals when we weren't looking). Dr Shea and her team know how to treat the breed both medically and temperamentally. Without fail, our dog goes from trying to run out of the waiting room to sitting on their laps 5 minutes later. You simply cannot do better on any front, particularly if you are someone who really sees your dog as deserving of the same quality of care that you would want for your human family.

Great experiences as a first-time pet owner! I’ve had three visits for our domestic shorthair cat so far — one general exam and two for GI issues. Pet care: I’ve seen Dr. Shea and Dr. Segal Reichlin, and both handled our cat with care and confidence. They answered all my questions and really put me at ease. Each visit, I’ve picked up new ways to improve my at-home care — for example, during my first visit, I got a nail-trimming lesson, and on a later one, I noticed how effectively the doctor brushed her coat. I went home and switched to a similar comb and technique, and they’ve made a big difference! Admin: The booking system is straightforward and reliable. I haven’t had any unexpectedly long waits on arrival, and the front desk staff are always prompt and thorough with follow-ups.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dr. Chiverton is incredible. She’s caring, patient, and truly puts her patients first. She takes her time, goes over every detail carefully, and makes thoughtful decisions with the animal’s comfort always in mind and even makes sure you are okay. She even let me hold my little guy during part of his treat event that’s usually done in the back to help him feel less anxious. I never feel rushed, and her kindness and diligence are unmatched. I trust her completely with my little guys care.
