How to Save Money at Lake Road Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my dog for his first appointment here yesterday and it was an amazing experience. Every single person we came into contact with was kind and knowledgeable. I have a bigger dog so there were a lot of workers in the room at once to keep him calm and everyone was very helpful. I felt comfortable coming into this office immediately and I’d trust them with my dog any time. Every person that came into the room acknowledged my dog and called him by name which made us feel at home. They were very transparent about costs and different options along the way, nothing felt forced. Not to mention it was a clean and perfect space for my dogs needs. I highly recommend coming here!

We connected with Lake Road Animal Hospital in February of this year for our dog, Millie. We were referred to Dr. Brennan by our primary vet for orthopedic consultation. Our vet said, "if it was my dog with these injuries, Dr. Brennan would be my first choice". My husband and I knew immediately after our consultation for CCL injury & repair with Dr. Brennan that we were in the right place and the best hands. I have been nothing but impressed with Dr. Brennan and the entire team at Lake Road Animal Hospital. This was a very difficult scenario for several reasons, first having a dog with torn CCL's in both hind legs and second having a dog that is quite anxious in the vet setting. Dr. Brennan and the team at Lake Road were beyond patient and kind when treating and interacting with Millie. We opted for Millie to have surgery bilateral to repair the CCL injuries. We felt completely supported through the entire process starting with injury consultation, post surgery and now in the recovery phase. I sent many messages that were always quickly responded to. Dr. Brennan was so thorough during every visit. I would recommend Lake Road Animal Hospital (& Dr. Brennan) to anyone for the best care for their 4-legged friends.

Compassionate, friendly, very short wait. Great care for my anxious cat. They were fantastic, detailed, and my cat who hates the was more comfortable in that visit than any vet office we have been to. All my concerns were adressed, lab work was done quickly. I was so impressed and will be back.

My cat had ingested some toxic flowers and so I needed a vet urgently. I called Agape Clinic and they turned me away saying they weren't accepting new Patients. I called Lake Road and they told us to come in the same day. From the moment we entered the facility, Dr. Mulligan and all the staff were so unbelievably friendly and warm, they greeted us, offered us coffee, made us feel at home, and most importantly, treated my cat like their own, playing with him, keeping him happy, making him feel welcome. He stayed overnight for two days and every time we came to see him or called about him, the staff were so amazingly courteous and friendly and accomodating. I am truly grateful to everyone at Lake Road for their kindness and warmth. Thanks for everything!
