How to Save Money at College Point Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Unprofessional, borderline rude, and crazy prices. The cost to spay a female dog is generally based on how old the dog is, how healthy she is, and how big she is - the bigger the dog, the more anesthesia required or something along those lines. She quoted me $800 minimum to spay a young, healthy, 8 pound dog - that's ridiculous, so I decided to see another vet. I called and asked if they could email me a copy of my dog's medical history. Vet's assistant was great - good attitude, polite, genuine - but she made it sound like she'd send the copy soon, if not almost immediately. Waited an hour, never received it, decided to go in person to ask for a physical copy. Was willing to wait a bit for it, I understand I can't just pop in and make a request and expect it immediately. Doctor immediately cut me off with a nasty attitude - "you can't expect us to drop everything just because you have a request, and you literally just called us, you have to give us at least two hours, etc etc." She looked so surprised when I wasn't having her attitude and gave it right back. Zero need for the attitude - so unprofessional. Take your money and time to a better vet with a better sense of professionalism and more reasonable pricing. 800 to spay a year old 8 pound dog.

Dr. Ryan is an amazing vet. She has cared for all of my dogs (6 to be exact) and I can honestly say, she has given each of them the absolute best treatment. My entire family uses Dr. Ryan and we all feel the same! She is truly the best and we don’t know what we’d do without her. She is always very thorough and takes the time to lay out the best plan for my babies. Dr. Ryan and her team have been there for us through so much, and always give 100%. I adore them!! And so do my dogs. I am so appreciative for everything Dr. Ryan has done for our family throughout the years.

This isnt a bad review. It is my honest review. All the other low reviews confirm my experience. The doctor seemed nice at first but later was extremely rude about the care of my pet. Then she billed me $500 for an recurring issue when i just wanted some meds for my pets she has prescribed before. Greedy doctor/practice for sure. Choice is yours but that is my experience.

Just finished having a horrible experience over the phone with Dr. Ryan. I called asking for what vaccines my dog was due for and his vaccine records. He has only been there once, so she told me what he was due for which is great but I also needed all his other vaccines he has had. When I initially came in I was asked to bring in his previous vaccine records therefore I was calling just to ask if they can give me that information since I don't have it anymore. I am getting my dog neutered next week and needed the information. Dr. Ryan is the person who assisted me and she had a worst attitude, screaming at me on the phone providing terrible customer service as I tried to explain to her multiple times what I was looking for. She kept screaming at me saying only 2 vaccines my dog had and she wasn't allowed to give me anymore information but how? if I am the owner requesting this information and for medical purposes. I just don't understand the logic behind what just happened and why I had to be treated this way. I really liked this place last year when I brought in my dog but after having this experience over the phone for something so simple it feels very disheartening to even come back.

Super nice about the treatment. Very upfront about what they are going to charge and give you multiple options (if there are) of treatment so you can choose what you think is best for your pet and they will give you their personal opinion too. They have their own store cat that roams around. He's super cute, chunky and stubby. Explained everything so detailed and we'll, also explain what everything does to my pet. Definitely recommend
