How to Save Money at Animal Clinic of Hollis Court

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so grateful for this place! My pet unfortunately had a little incident at the dog park, and the receptionist was BEYOND helpful in getting us in for a last minute appointment. The doctor and the tech was both super kind and professional! They showed us everything we needed, instructions were clear, I am forever grateful for the staff here!

I had a bad experience with this vet. They were going to charge me $4,000 for a surgery on my cat, saying it was a "good deal" relative to other providers. This proved to be wrong; The second vet I went to ultimately charged just $2500 for the same surgery, was more committed to my cat's overall health, and even spotted things in an x-ray that this vet missed. If you go to this vet, I'd recommend getting a second opinion. I will not be returning.

My mom brought our cat to this vet because she found blood in his urine. The vet charged nearly $1,000 dollar in total and did not detect my cat’s bladder stones! The visit, including a $355 “health check”, a $75 “office examination” both without specifying what were being examined or anything to note. They took an X-ray (for $470) and told us there’s nothing detected, just take medicine for his infection. But after a week, he still peed blood. We found out he has bladder stones in ultra sound, and it was showing in the X-ray! How did you miss it? Because of your misdiagnosis my cat suffered more days of bleeding and infections! This place doesn’t care about your pets, they just want your $$$$. They offered me $4000 for the bladder surgery, calling it “a deal you won’t find elsewhere”, sounding like a car dealer. My cat is my family, he is not just your “business” that you can take advantage of!

I received a last minute appointment for my 15 year old shih tzu. My previous vet that I seen for year wasn’t available and he needed imitate attention from the quarter round size mass on his left paw. My previous vet said because of his age and his heart murmur they couldn’t remove it and just to soak it in warm water it should go away. Needless to say a year later it never went away but it also wasn’t bothering him so we thought nothing if it until he jumped off the couch wrong and it ripped half way off. They immediately let us know that they would have to remove it but obviously due to his age and heart condition he may not make. I never got insurance for my dog so understand that we knew it would be a pricey procedure for a “what if”. However I decided to give it a chance against all odds. They had to do run about four test to make sure he was even in condition to attempt the procedure. again everything was with a price tag but the vet gave me discounts when he could and I gratefully appreciated all he could do. My previous vet kind of wrote my dog off cause of his age but this vet gave him a fighting chance. He put him on vitamins and also checked his teeth noticing they were in bad shape and some definitely had to come out to improve his health. I say this because my other vet never said anything about his teeth I would ask and he would say they were fine. In the end the surgery went smoothly they removed the mass on his paw and five teeth as well as a mass they found in his mouth which I had seen before. When I tell you I have a new dog who is jumping around cuddling and playing and has an appetite, he just seems so much happier. he will be on heart meds for the duration of his life but it was expected. I’m grateful for this clinic and definitely recommend if you want to get to the bottom of what wrong with your pet.
