How to Save Money at Farmingdale Dog & Cat Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my baby Dream to get checked, curb side was convenient for me, the process was quick, they also are very affordable I thought I was spending tons of money but it wasn't the case. I moved from Atlanta so I needed a new doctor for him and I will be bringing him more often for my cats needs. Thank you 🩵

Until my recent experience, I used to always recommend Farmingdale dog and cat clinic. My dog was having issues with, what I now know to be, incontinence. When I mentioned this in my convos with the treating vet, I was told this was not the issue. Incontinence is something common that does happen in dogs but according to the vet who saw my dog , they didn’t know what was going on and treated this as something that has never happened before. I advised them that I was trying to figure out the issue of what was going without spending for any unnecessary testing. After a round of antibiotics and a flush(which was also found to be unnecessary) The vet advised us that we needed an ultrasound ( which can run about $600) I was not confident that this testing was needed so, I decided to get a second opinion. After doing so , I really question the knowledge of the vet at this clinic. I wasted my time and money here for something that is just a common occurrence in dogs. The second vet I saw about this issue , was very knowledgeable and knew exactly what could be going on and my thoughts as to it being incontinence were not just ignored. We did not need an ultrasound, she was able to get a urine sample and while doing so was scan to see if there was anything else major going on. (which is something this doc could have done as well. ) That test was $78 and the only test performed. This could have all been settled if the clinic had just done the right testing or admitted that they really didn’t know how to deal with this. As I asked multiple time. The vets words after nothing changed with my dog’s condition was “ idk what’s wrong, all of my ideas didn’t work”

I have been caring for a friendly feral for 2 years. Her fur became matted in July so I knew she needed to go to vet and I always said if I had to take her to vet, I would try making her an indoor cat. My vet for my 2 indoor cats wanted me to transport sedated cat from his office to groomer to shave the mats out. I was recommended to call Farmingdale Clinic since they handle ferals. Alicia was wonderful and familiar with taking in ferals and made me feel confident enough to make an appointment. Dr. Kuehn made sure she was all clear to transition her to my indoor boys. Dr. Kuehn ended up brushing mats out. It has been 3 weeks and it is a slow process since Honey is approx 4-5 years old and my boys are 3yrs. Lots of hissing and growling but no aggressiveness. Prices were extremely reasonable and I would highly recommend this vet. It was a bit of a ride for me especially in rush hour and a screaming cat but worth it. I am considering switching vets. My only complaint would be having to drop off pet and not being able to stay in exam room since I have had bad experiences with letting my pet out of my sight with other vets. In this case, my feral needed a sedated exam so I fully understand having to drop off. God bless you all for taking care of these animals and not ripping off the owners.
