How to Save Money at Coronado Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is the best vet clinic I have been to! The upfront staff is amazing, they give you the personal attention you would expect to get 20 years ago! Unfortunately in this day and age, most places are just a numbers game at Coronado Pet Hospital you are family! I have been going there for about 9 years and their service and kindness has been the same. I had never had a Vet call me after hours to make sure my dog was doing OK, Dr. Davis does, she is amazing!!! I highly recommend seeing them, when your dollars are stretched you want people who care and they do.

Caring and compassionate quality care is what you’ll get here. All four of my dogs are taken care of by Coronado Pet Hospital. All have been seen by Dr. Smith. We had a JRT who was at the end stage of her life last year (she has since passed) and I can’t stress enough how caring and compassionate Dr. Smith was with our dog and us. This hospital is always busy and Dr. Smith seemed especially exhausted, but she always took the time to see our dog and treated her as if she were her own dog. We will always be grateful for her care. We recently rescued a mini Aussie puppy who is very fearful. Everyone has been patient and caring with her as well. She’ll be going in for her spay soon. A friend tried to get me to go to another vet saying they are low cost, but I don’t trust any other place with my dogs’ health. I also have a 4 lb yorkie and two chihuahuas (5 and 6 lb). My 6 lb chihuahuas will be going in for his dental in a week. Each time I’ve gone in, from the front office staff to the techs to the docs, all have been friendly, helpful and showed genuine care for my dogs. Extra kudos to the front office staff, who have to deal with us sometimes panicked and stressed out pet parents, not only in person, but also over the phone.

Simba Roberts

The people at the Coronado Pet Hospital are the kindest souls on the planet. Dr. Powers and company saved my baby: Simba’s life. We were so lucky to be near them when my 17 yo Tibetan Spaniel experienced a near death breathing/stroke episode. They acted so quickly and expertly when we knocked on the door without any warning. It is Albuquerque metropolitans fortune to have them service them. Thank you so much. Eternally grateful!

3/14/2023 This puppy was found near the rio grande a couple of milles from BDD, in Santa Fe, NM. Was starving, tired and very thirsty. Some one drove him back to Buckman Direct Diversion, as soonest I put my eyes on him I wanted to take him home and help him, so I left work early with him. We both drove 35 miles back home to Bernalillo, then we stop for food and water for the poppy. After that I took him to this wonderful place, and he received more then I could ever excepted. He is in good hands and I feel so thankful for all the positive medical attention, and the treatment was wonderful. The people who run this place are a blessing 🙏🏻 Thank you all for treating us amazing! We will probably never forget it.
