How to Save Money at Plaza Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They did not help us at the end with our pet prescriptions because of a personal grudge. They preferred to let me dog suffer. And now they are Public Shaming us sharing personal information (saying we work in health care). See other comments. They start changing the response to comments and telling lies to make comments look bad from complaining instead of offering and apology.

At the beginning they were good. Then they became unhelpful and uncaring for my pet. Refused to give medication refills at the end. "To clarify: my pet had multiple Myeloma, he was in palliative treatment and unfortunately he expired past June. We showed Plaza records for medications prescribed by the previous hospital in New Jersey, all of them were previously prescribed, they did not give us any new medications that were not prescribed before. We lived in Kansas City 1 year and paid 2 appointments with them in total. In our last appointment we forgot to ask for Gabapentin which we had leftover from the previous year, once we ran out, 1 week after the last appointment (which was a routine visit for eye drops and med refills) we called to ask for gabapentin and they refused to give us that medication. Then 3 months later in June I explained we were moving out to Michigan and needed a refill for Blood pressure medications. They refused to do so and told us to find another veterinarian because of my frequent requests and because I cancelled one appointment in the past. I appreciate everyone's job. The manager was very rude, talking over me, and did want to help even when I begged for the meds, he still dismissed my dying pet from their practice. I appreciate what they did at the beginning because it was a lot of work. Unfortunately they became upset by our medical requests. ... Now they are not being honest and claiming I yelled at their staff. This is a lie. That's shameful. As I stated. I went to a follow up visit and forgot to ask refills for Gabapentin and the blood pressure pills. A week or 2 weeks later I called to ask if they would give it to my dog and they declined. I understood that they were hesitant to give Gabapentin, which they never prescribed in the first place. But when they declined to fill the blood pressure medications and dismissed my pet from the clinic I called multiple times to clarify and talk to someone. I spoke to a doctor who just answered the phone and said "please do not call us back again". So I didn't. I sent an email explaining the situation and they just ignored it. Then when we moved to Michigan and the new Vet requested records from them they were upset and emailed me back saying that I was changing practices and I was being rude. They were not comprehensive. Did not run the extra mile. And they are lying now and saying I was requesting prescriptions out of nowhere. Inappropriate, unapologetic and making false accusations.

Dr. Twig is conscientious, knowledgeable and puts you at ease even in difficult situations. All the veterinarians and staff there are compassionate people who genuinely care about your animal . Our dog had to have her leg amputated after complications from a leg surgery(not done there). It was difficult for us but Dr Twig helped us through the process. The staff is amazing . These are just the kind of people you want caring for your animal that is like family to you.

Great experience. Doctor was knowledgeable and explained things thoroughly. The nurses were great also. My dogs rash began to improve the next day. Prices are a little higher than I’ve experienced but as with most things, you get what you pay for. Excellent care will always cost more. Staff even recommended to bring my dog by for treats whenever I wanted to acclimate him to the environment. Highly recommend.
