How to Save Money at Animal Medical Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Everyone was very friendly and helpful. They were good with my dog and seemed very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend.

My dog was in distress ( unable to get out of the vehicle, gums were greyish white, vomiting and very lethargic) . My Vet was not available (North Straits) and I was directed to Animal Medical clinic of Cheboygan, Indian River or Maple clinic in Alanson. I chose to take my dog to Animal Medical Clinic of Cheboygan because it was 2 Mins from my home. When approaching the front desk and informing the receptionist of the situation she stated, that they do not generally see Dr. Nelson's clients due to issues of Dr. Nelson not wanting to participate in emergency visits with other Vet clinics. Not only was I informed of this once , but 2 more times while I was there. When rushing your pet to an emergency visit, no pet parent wants to here about how a physician is butt hurt over something that has nothing to do with your pet. You just want your pet to be examined and treated. I felt it was VERY unprofessional to not only mention this once, but two more times. Not to mention the last time I was in formed of the situation between the Vet Dr's, was while I was paying for my bill, infront of a full waiting room. I also feel that I was over charged do to the situation between the Vet Dr's. Humans that choose to care for other humans/pets are suppose to be in that field because they want to treat, help and generally care about their client or someone else's, not making the clients feel bad about a situation that has nothing to do with them. I do not recommend taking your pet to this animal clinic, just from my first and only visit.

This vet I will trust with any of my fur babies. I am out of state and my boyfriend is new to caring for pets yet they helped him every step of the way with the stray kitten he found. They truly are there for your animals and will do anything to make sure they live long healthy lives.

I first called Indian River and was referred to this clinic for my dogs ear infection and ear hematoma. I called and waited on hold for 8 minutes, no big deal at all. Got on phone with receptionist and I try to explain what’s going on with my dog and she cuts me off to explain her first appointment is June 1st. I say ok great I would like to schedule that. Then she proceeds to ask me if my reason for calling is that my dog has diarrhea, I tell her no that my dog has an ear infection and blood in her ear. She ignores me and proceeds to tell me to change her food to a bland rice and chicken diet. I thought maybe she was talking about switching her food because of the ear infection but then she says in about a week the diarrhea should clear up. She is not listening so I gave up and say ok I would like to schedule the appointment. She continues on about diarrhea and then I say ok thank you and hoping she will schedule the appointment. But she didn’t and instead she said thank you and hung up on me. Please listen to the pet owners when they are trying to explain what is happening. I do not recommend this place.

They do the best there with taking care of just walking in to get your animals nails clipped to checking on things that you need done right away. All the people who work there are just wonderful and I couldn't be more pleased with how they handle our pets.
