How to Save Money at CHALMETTE PET WELLNESS

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Millet Is the kindest vet I have ever been too! My Persian cat Mateo has been going to him for years now. Cats can be very grumpy, but you can tell Dr.Millet cares so much and takes his time with them. He’s very informative and lets you know everything he’s doing. I never feel pressured into anything. Also never over charged or feel taken advantage of like many of the other vets in chalmette do. I refer everyone I know to bring their babies to Dr.Millet!

Dr. Millet is the kindness & most caring veterinarian my 13 yr old dog has seen. I discovered him a few years ago after having a horrible experience with a different vet in Stb parish. My girl had surgery there a few days ago and can’t say enough about how wonderful both Dr. Millet and the staff have been through this scary time. He’s meticulous yet very kind and caring. I appreciate his bedside manner and patience. I’ll definitely be recommending Chalmette Pet Wellness in the future

Dr. Jimmy is like the pet whisperer. He has accurately diagnosed our dogs without an exorbitant amount of testing like other vets, sometimes with no tests at all! He truly cares about the animals. They also very affordable. We drive from Metairie to Chalmette because we love this practice so much!

A few months ago I brought my fur baby here, Dr. Millet ran several test to try and figure out what’s was wrong, he sent me home with meds. I had to bring him back a couple of days later, went home with more meds and he recommended we see a specialist who wanted to see my baby the next day. My fur baby was in a lot of pain and the specialist is in Mandeville. My baby doesn’t like car rides and I knew he would be very nervous so before leaving the parish I called the office and spoke with the blond headed girl to ask if could I buy a couple squirts of the aromatherapy that they put on a towel and put in the cage with the fur baby to calm them down. She VERY rudely told me “NO, I won’t sell you a few squirts, I will sell you a bottle for $20”. I explained I didn’t need a whole bottle and she told me “that’s your problem”. I asked could she please ask the dr if I bring in a towel can I please buy a few squirts, her reply with attitude was “I’ll asked but I KNOW he’ll say NO”. I said “in a few days I spent nearly $700 there and you won’t sell me a few squirts?” Snapping at me she replied “NO but if you want I’ll ask the dr. but I know the answer. “ I said “yes please ask him” she said “I’ll call you back” and hung up the phone. I am still waiting for that phone call. I don’t know if she ever asked him and he actually said no or if she just blew me off. I was so upset being treated that way after spending so much money there and that she\they didn’t care that I had to drive 45 minutes to Mandeville with a nervous cat that was in pain and they wouldn’t help me to try and calm him for the long car ride. My daughter had a horrific experience with this girl this week but I’ll let her tell her own story.

Just switched to Dr. Millet and left feeling like I've made the right decision for my 10 yo baby. Dr. Millet was thorough, knowledgeable, and caring with Benson. He even gave Benson a "lollipop" at the end. His vet tech was also super caring and loving towards Benson. I have referred all of my friends and family to Dr. Millet. Thanks for treating my baby like your own!
