How to Save Money at Hartland Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The doctor was very kind and nice. However; the place was filthy when I went to take my pet in for a visit. When I was brought into the exam room I let my pet out of his carrier and he began sniffing around. As I was watching him, I noticed that there were multiple bugs crawling around and there was blood on the floor. I immediately picked him up and put him back into his carrier and didn’t not let him on the floor after. Once the exam was done, I was waiting for a price sheet when asked to switch rooms. The blood spot was still on the floor and another animal had entered the room without it being cleaned. I am extremely disappointed at the negligence of this biohazard.

Been bringing our dog here for about 1 year now, and we love Dr. Shannon! They always listen to our concerns, and are able to get us in quickly when our dog has an issue.

Visited Hartland Vet clinic with a stray cat we found. the staff and vet was friendly and took the time to present me with all the options on my stray cat. I went ahead and had the cat checked over and neutered ..highly recommend Hartland Veterinary Clinic.

Bear with me this will be long. Left for work in the morning with a perfectly healthy cat and came home 9 hours later to him in pain and distress. Called our local vet and like normal they are unavailable with emergencies…. so I happened to remember a kid from my town marrying a vet so looked on FB and found Dr. Shannon - on a whim and many prayers I called and asked what the chances were they could get us in ASAP - mind you it is 5pm on a Friday - the woman who answered the phone said if you can come now we can see him. I reminded her I was about 20/25 mins away and she said no worries they are there. Drove our big boy (20lb cat) there. Within mins we had a diagnosis and it was terminal . Dr. Shannon was so compassionate and even offered to stay late so my husband could be there when we put him down. That right there made me a client for life. I could feel her sympathy just by looking in her eyes - she truly cared and was heartbroken for us. If I could give Dr. Shannon and this clinic more than 5 stars I would. They went above and beyond and made an absolutely heartbreaking and gut wrenching situation as bearable as they could. We thank you for putting an end to Oakleys pain. He was a family member to us and is so greatly missed.

We have been coming to Hartland Veterinary Clinic before Dr. Shannon purchased the practice. We stayed with Hartland because we respect Dr. Shannon. She is wonderful and her staff is amazing. We were there today with our 6 month old Pompoo, Sandy. She had been scratching her ears and body. My husband thought it may be allergies. He was right and Dr. Shannon gave Sandy a shot. She has not scratched once since that shot. Thank you Dr. Shannon!
