How to Save Money at VCA West Suburban Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Tank, our 9 yr old Great Dane mix has been a patient here since 2017, and has always received excellent care. He always sees his best friend, Dr Zary, but yesterday Tank wasn’t feeling his best, so we were able to get in and meet Dr. Muehrcke! Dr Muehrcke spent 2 hours of her time examining Tank thoroughly with a physical exam, X-rays, and an ultrasound to find out what was causing his unusual symptoms. She laid on the floor petting him and making sure he wasn’t anxious. She is so loving and caring. She also made sure Dr. Zary was informed of Tank’s issues. He even took some time to come check on Tank. Matt, the vet tech is also so very loving and kind. We can’t thank the entire staff at VCA West Suburban enough for their loving care and concerns. I’m happy to say Tank is doing so much better today!!!🥰

I feel so lucky to be able to take our little boy Puffy to this VCA animal hospital. The vets are very nice, Compassionate, gentle and they actually listen and discuss what they recommend and provide all the information to you. The techs are great and so is the front staff. We have been there many times when we adopted Puffy we found out he has many health problems. I highly recommend West Suburban and everytime we go I chat with the other patients moms and dads in the waiting room n they too rave abt this place! I just want to say thanks to all of the VCA West Suburban staff because it really shows how much u all really care abt ur patients!!

I love going here! I take my puppy Bernese Mountain dog to see Dr Edmonson. She's a very knowledgeable vet and she listens and answers all my questions regarding my puppy.

I love West Suburban for my ferrets and the shelter ferrets I rehab. Dr Zary and Dr Childs are the best. The whole entire clinic team is absolutely wonderful, professional and helpful. I've been to a couple other exotic vets and I can't say enough great things about West Suburban. Dr Zary & Dr Childs are knowledgeable, compassionate & caring. When my adopted ferret Sybil was coming to her end with her insulinoma battle that Dr Zary did everything he could to help her, Dr Childs was able to stay a little over her shift to help me put my girl to rest. I also rehab a lot of shelter ferrets and if it is beyond my skills, their clinic will try to fit them in when possible for emergency evaluation. It is those kinds of things to let you know these vets and their staff care and will do what they can, when they can. It is those little things, that you are grateful for and always remember. From the pleasant front desk, to the caring supporting staff, onto the compassionate techs and finally to the absolutely wonderful vets, everyone has been kind and supportive. As quality exotic vets in the Chicagoland area are becoming increasingly harder to find, hoping West Suburban can increase their exotic vet staff as they are the place to go and I won't take my ferrets anywhere else now.
