How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They have been taking my doggy for 11 years . Recently she was ill and i didn't know what was wrong so the closest appointment was weeks away so i booked a check up for the next morning. Once they saw how my bella was they kept her and treated her right away. I was so happy and relieved they were there to care for my old girl. She is now off her medication and back to her happy self. THANK YOU BANFIELD

Terrible communication and customer service. Used Banfield at different locations in the past for my family dogs - always had different experiences. Elgin was the most frustrating. Wanted to give them another chance this time around since they're closer to our new house. Unfortunately still disappointing from the reception side. Booked my dogs original comprehensive exam appointment mid August, received a phone call from their team that they had last minute openings the next day - great. Showed up to the appointment just to learn I was scheduled for a different time than given and there was no flexibility. No confirmation call, text or email/message thru app to communicate. Fast forward to today, the rescheduled appointment day. Apparently if you don't specifically CALL back to confirm they will automatically cancel your appointment. Yet, they can email your cancelation. No option to confirm on the app, or no attempts to reach out thru email. Very outdated process. When I called to question the cancelation, major attitude was given because I didn't specifically call back- yet they were magically able to "keep" my appointment. No thanks, I booked with the Hoffman Estates locations instead. Maybe try opening other lines of communication for confirmation like the other locations. Or even better, have better reception staff so it's a pleasant interaction. Guess bad habits die hard.

Took my 9 month old American Bully in for a vet check up today and was very disappointed with the visit! Veterinarian Dena Reinisch and Jennifer Kempski should not be employed by this clinic if they can’t tell the difference between an aggressive pup or a frightened one all because of their breed! Then proceeded to say my pup needed to be sedated in order to be seen- (a 9month old puppy!) Just another money making gimmic Al because of her breed! I can’t wait to take my beautiful pup to another veterinarian so they can handle her the right way give her the care she needs - Do not take your big dog there as they stigmatize against bullies and are scared of them and don’t know how to do the job right!! Shame on you!! Ban Banfield!!

the service for pets has gone down in the last few years. They are quick to get your pet in but take their time not letting you know what's going on with your pet and give you excuses we're short handed when the doctor or nurse or assistant should take the time to let pet owners know what's going on. I just feel they don't care while my dog in sitting in a metal cage scared without water without food because she isn't comfortable. It's like this every time I bring them in.

Keep your pets safe, keep them AWAY from this place! DO NOT bring your pet here! They will lie to you; they don't care about your pet's healthcare. I asked them to check the RIGHT toenail of my dog on her last control. The vet cut off the LEFT toenail, and then when asked, she lies over and over, stating the right toenail had no injury (anyone with eyes was able to see that was not true), but as we all are human and can make mistakes, we didn't argue much more. A few days later, my poor dog loose part of the right toenail, bleeding and feeling pain AGAIN!!! And now she lost the nail and has a HOLE instead and is in pain! But as they just told me, "THEY CANNOT DO AN APPOINTMENT sooner than 4 days from now BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT AN EMERGENCY HOSPITAL " DONT bring your pets here if you expect them to be in good care. Btw I was there with the dog when they refuse to even check if it was something that could be out on hold for 4 days! I requested a manager and is no surprise to me that the receptionist provided me with the wrong “manager contact info”,so they not just lie, they do it on purpose to cover their mistakes.
