How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Extremely frustrated with this hospital. We have worked hard to make sure my pets experience was great while feeling the staff does nothing to do the same. My dog was on very strong medication to assist with the anxiety for the appointment. He went though all of that only to be cancelled on 10 minutes before his appointment time. As a person who loves their pets I would strongly not recommend this hospital.

I have been a Banfield Wellness Plan client since '95 if possible wherever I've lived. Dr. Park at Schaumburg/Hoffman has been wonderful to both me & to my dog through routine visits, surgeries & minor scares. She & the staff keep me calm, treat my dog well & take the safest steps to ensure he has the best care, whether the issue is minor or urgent. They're very thorough & consistent. They also are patient w questions in person & on the phone, plus 24/7 VetChat is such a great feature because so many things happen at the worst times! Professional, kind, friendly & great at what they do - & I do not trust my dogs to just anyone. I'm lucky they're here for us.

I went there twice and I am not going there any more. Front desk staff so rude. Send my daughter for buster vaccination for my dog, only one shot nothing else and done, but I was charged for physicals again and of course vaccine which is understandable. I called desk just to verify why I was charged again for the physicals(which was already done 3 weeks ago) and I asked how often do you do physicals on the dog. The front desk lady got so mad, she was soo rude, and when I asked her for her name she hung up on me. My daughter said that she was already rude when they were there in person. I do not recommend this place.

Very bad veterinarian clinic. I had scheduled a dental appointment for my cat. Two days prior of the appointment, one of the veterinarian technicians called to inform me that the veterinarian was not going to perform a dental cleaning because she claimed that on my cat’s last vet visit (dating back on October 2021), the veterinarian who examined my cat detected a heart murmur. I’ve been avoiding Banfield for almost a year because I have trust issues with the veterinarians and vet techs and decided to take the cat to another vet clinic (not a Banfield clinic). The veterinarian who examined my cat did not detect a heart murmur. In fact, I took my cat to this veterinarian twice and she confirmed that there was no heart murmur. This veterinarian looked through my cat’s medical records and nowhere did she find notes from Banfield stating that my cat has a heart murmur. It’s appalling that this veterinarian and vet technician (I’m tempted to reveal their names) would lie to me about my cat’s health and later to find out the truth. I’m not sure why this Banfield veterinarian would lie to pet owners and have them go to specialty clinics to spend a lot of money for a health problem that doesn’t exist. I write this review as a warning to other pet owners about this Banfield clinic. I don’t recommend Banfield, this clinic is a ripoff and a joke. You’re better off taking your pet to a regular animal hospital.

I have always had a great experience here. They know and love my dog. I like the wellness plan including shots and heartworm medicine. It's easier to pay monthly. My only issue is if we have an emergency they can never fit us in. I end up taking him to Care animal for emergencies if I can't get in at Banfield.
