How to Save Money at VCA Heritage Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I will take my pets here for as long as I live in the area. They were always very attentive and extremely helpful anytime I had to take my pet to the vet. When I had to put my beloved dog down they made the whole process not as horrible, they let us stay for as long as we needed. They are so nice and really seem to care about the animals and the families that come in.

I have had pets all of my life and this visit was the first time I have EVER seen a doctor get down on the floor and love on a fur baby! Dr. Dust was so nice and gentle with "Sweetness". I appreciated that he took the time to explain exactly what he saw going on with my dog. BTW, it's an hour drive for me and I say it is worth it!

This entire team is amazing. Our puppy had caught parvo. And was on day 5 with 2 days of treatment over the New Years break. by the time we were able to get him in first thing Monday morning. He was in critical condition by the time we got there. They were pretty booked that morning but had us come in anyways. When we got there, they made him a priority. When we talked about financial options. And I didn’t get approved for care credit, they made sure that I knew about every option available. And didn’t let the cost affect the care that he got that day. They made sure he was still getting EVERYTHING he needed. And made sure that they did absolutely everything they could to make him better. Unfortunately our sweet Bullet wasn’t able to pull through and was going into sepsis and was in pain from any movement. Everyone there was great with communicating what was going on. They updated me throughout the whole day. And even in his end of life care, they were extremely compassionate and caring for his needs and ours. After this I will never go to another vet clinic. I’m grateful that our baby got to spend his last moments in the care of this amazing team.

Great vets, great staff. I've gone there for more than 10 years and they have always been helpful and compassionate. Years ago my cat had breast cancer, her prognosis wasn't good, but we did at least four surgeries. We loved that cat so much and other than the cancer she was healthy and would bounce back from the surgeries quickly, so we did as many surgeries as we could and we bought her some time. The surgeries weren't cheap, but they got significantly cheaper each time because we were willing to do whatever it took to help her and the vet and staff saw that and reduced the prices of everything. And when she couldn't have any more surgeries Dr. Dust let us know there was nothing else we could do, that we had done everything possible for her in such a compassionate way. He even teared up. These people care deeply about animals and will help your fur babies be as healthy and happy as possible! I can't recommend them enough!

Dr. McElroy is awesome!! We have an elderly golden retriever, and she has been working with us to keep him with a good quality of life. She is so gentle with him, and is always happy to take time to explain things to us. She was even willing to discuss our boy with a family member who is a vet, she offered to do this for us knowing it would help us to know that we were making the best decisions. Additionally Dr. Dust has provided more than excellent service in the past. He assisted us with gentleness and great empathy when we were there for our other dog. The staff that assists out front is more than amazing and always willing to be helpful. I cannot sing the praises of VCA high enough.
