How to Save Money at Animal Emergency of Mokena

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Last night we had to bring in our sweet, old dog and say our goodbyes. The staff was kind and sensitive, presented us with all of our options, and was so gentle with our sweet girl and with us as we coped with some very big emotions. I appreciate the service and the supportive environment during one of the most stressful times in my life. Thank you. RIP Juno, you will be missed and never forgotten.

I wish I had asked around first before I brought my dog here after my regular vet was closed, desperately looking for help. She had been sick for a few days, not eating/drinking and I was worried. Everyone was very welcoming and nice, AT FIRST. After doing an X-ray it was discovered that she needed surgery. They wanted $3500-$4500. After explaining that was an amount we were UNSURE we could come up with in full (mind you we did have $1900), the attitude completely changed. We were then met with rudeness, a smart mouth and the ONLY option that was given to us was to relinquish her to a shelter so she could be “better cared for”. As if I hadn’t been doing that for years! We opted to take her home and wait for our own vet (which WAS an option that was given to us in the beginning). They gave her some meds, and sent us with some antibiotics and a stern warning of the risks of waiting and slammed (yes, slammed) the receipt for the $600 that the visit costed on the counter. They told us our vet probably wouldn’t be able to get her in FOR DAYS and that she’d probably die. Wrong. They got her in first thing Monday. She is now back home, perked up, and recovering nicely after going to HER vet who charged $700 total for the entire surgery, overnight stay, and meds! I understand that they supposedly want what’s “best” for the animals, and emergency care may cost more, but I find it very heartless and rude that the ONLY option we were given was to relinquish the dog. They didn’t even mention care credit (which just to NOTE had they mentioned this - we were also approved for $1500 there as well on top of the $1900 we had so we almost had all of the money). You’d rather take and give away someone’s dog to a shelter as opposed to helping them with a payment plan or other options? People come here for help, and the woman who checked us out needs a HUGE lesson on compassion and how to treat people. I’ll never go here again. I pray I never need emergency care again but if I do I’ll drive farther away!

Highly recommend them. Dr. Gary treated our cat and was awesome. Best decision to go here. Very very very kind and knowledgeable staff. Clients wait in their car with their animals until triage begins but it actually reduced my cats stress vs sitting in a waiting room.

My family had to put down our 14 year old girl today. Her name was Lily. I don’t know the name of the woman I spoke to this morning but when I tell you she made my heart burst with joy she MADE MY HEART BURST WITH JOY. I live in Virginia and obviously I was not able to be there when our girl crossed the rainbow bridge. My family opted out of receiving Lillian’s ashes and that shattered my heart. I called the Mokena emergency vet in hopes that maybe I could buy the ashes and have them sent to me. This was something she was more than willing to do for me but I ultimately decided due to cost to not go through with it. HOWEVER she told me that she will send me an ink paw print of her paw AND some of her hair for me to have. I could not be more grateful for this woman or this practice. It’s been an awful way to start the new year but she’s made a little easier for someone who was not able to say goodbye.

Do NOT bring your pet here! They are very unprofessional, talk about clients negatively openly for all to hear in the waiting room as well as their own personal lives. They will inappropriately undergo many tests without telling you costs and $1k later tell you all tests are normal. It is like a scam and they don’t even know what they’re doing. Use your trusted family vet! Do not go here!
