How to Save Money at 4 Paws Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

You're not going to find a more incredible vet than Dr. Dona in the NW burbs of Chicago!! She's a no nonsense but sincere and well schooled vet. We gladly go out of our way to have her as our sole source of animal care. We discovered her thru her selfless and committed act of Spay and Stay for ferrel cats in Lake County. Our little 8yr old Mini was how we found 4Paws. We rescued Mini from the farm property I work at. Mini was wild and kept a far distance from humans at under 1yr old and was coughing. Trapping her was no small feat. Dr Dona treated her for a respiratory infection among all the other things she needed, including a chip id. Mini now enjoys a snuggly, safe life as a solely indoor cat thanks to Dr Dona's serious, wise recommendation to do so after expressing her joy that we were not going to return her to the farm. That's an option you have when you go thru the Spay and Stay organization. She and other selfless vets in Lake County are making a huge difference in the slowing down of ferrel pregnancies by spaying and treating wild cats and having you release them back outside to live the remainder of their lives without making more ferrell's. We've since taken in 2 brother kittens found on the side of the road who went thru the same program. We recommend Dr Dona to many friends and family for their own pets. Every one who's taken that recommendation have traded in their old vet for her. She's a no nonsense professional who knows her job well and helps with the hardest cases without breaking your bank. Fair and honest. Literally, goes out of her way to make sure your furr babies are taken care of. She's met us on the road several times to make sure we had the medicine we've needed for our pets. Thank you for your huge heart and incredible animal wisdom, Dr Dona! We love you!

I called 4 Paws Tuesday, April 24 with a concern for my dog, I have not heard back as of today, Friday, April 28. She has been to this vet prior for treatment. A call back would be nice at least. I ended up taking her to another vet and she received proper treatment. For an animal hospital, this is not recommended for responding to needs, or concerns.

Dr. Donna is amazing, we need more compassionate people like her. As for her spay/ neuter? Absolutely amazing! The incisions are so tiny and the dogs don't even seem to be affected by a long recovery

Dr. Donna was amazing. The front desk employee was nice. This was our first visit with Dr. Donna, she was recommended by my dog's groomer, Josie. And I'm so glad and thankful she sent me her way. I am very pleased with how my XO'S (dog) visit went and how helpful Dr. Donna was. My fiance is the one that went to the appt. But I know he's a good judge of character, and he said he felt good energy and said nothing but good things about 4PAWS. Thank you Dr. DONNA ! You will be seeing us soon with my daughter's kittens. You have new happy customers, that's for sure.

The staff here clearly doesn’t care. Plain and simple. The front desk staff is constantly changing and is never friendly. They never answer the phone or return voicemails. Just cause your prices are cheap, doesn’t mean you should act cheap.
