How to Save Money at Evanston Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Always leave knowing the staff and doctor are thorough and care about my pets' well-being. They're also very nice and my wait is never too long. They are also tolerant, as my dog is a big spaz!

As one of Dr Henry's first patients when she started her practice, I was initially very happy. Unfortunately her practice has fallen into a second-tier status that's about the same as a pet store practice. When I called to see if they could see Ripley due to her limping possibly from a cracked nail within the next several days I was informed by a rather insolent person that Dr Henry said they aren't an urgent care and the next available appt time was 16 days hence. AVOID THESE GUYS AT ALL COSTS. And whoever posts these snarky responses acting like you actually care about your patients, please don't bother. You could spend your time better by finding five minutes to see your patients and keep your customers happy.

I’ve been really angry since March and waited to write a review to make sure it wasn’t from an emotional place. I took my cat here for recurring UTIs. I told them what a previous vet did that worked and they wouldn’t do it. He would be fine a month or 2 then get a uti again, I’d tell them what worked, they wouldn’t do it, now he’s dead. I spent thousands on his care at the emergency vet, hundreds here, and when I begged for help over the phone they turned me away and I accrued another thousand at the emergency vet. I called crying in March saying his UTI back and I couldn’t afford treatment so he needed to be let down. I maxed all all my credit cards, got care credit, and my dad just passed so I spent 8k on his funeral. I needed it done there because it was several hundred cheaper than emergency care. I can’t remember who “treated” Oscar, but she relayed that I needed to get to emergency care ASAP because it was life threatening. That’s why I called- they charged me 100s for treatment that didn’t work when I repeatedly told the doctor what did, then when I needed help in a completely devastating time they told me to go to emergency care. Blue Pearl was very compassionate but I’m still paying off the euthanasia that could’ve been done here, where I spent 100s of dollars with people I mistakenly trusted with my cat’s care.

Fantastic staff! Women owned! Dr. Henry is amazing! I got to know of them from fostering for the Evanston Animal Shelter, and then started taking my own pup there as well, even though I live downtown Chicago- they're worth the drive! I won't take my kids anywhere else! Extremely patient staff, very kind doctors that will do whatever it takes to help your kid to feel better! I won't forget Dr. Henry bravely handling one of my not so friendly fosters with a lot of patience and grace! Wonderful staff all around! Thank you EAH!!

An attorney friend of mine told me last week, "If you could bottle and sell that 'dog that likes going to the vet' stuff, you can make a fortune!" The only problem with that investment is I don't think I'd make any money off of any pup but my own. I had a Lab and a German Shepherd for 22 combined years, and both of them acted like I was taking them on a trip to an ammonia factory whenever a vet visit was needed! It was to the point where muzzles and anesthesia were always involved. Meanwhile, my current dog has CONSISTENTLY almost yanked the leash out of my hand as soon as we turned the corner to the block where this veterinary office is. SHE ABSOLUTELY LOVES THIS PLACE, specifically a few vet techs and the veterinarian too. Post-pandemic, I pondered on whether she liked this vet office because they gave her treats. But she's even happy to see techs with no treats. She just likes it there. Although I'm the boss of her in every other way, she's the boss of me when it comes to two things: the vet and our walking route (the latter of which she moves like a tour guide). Although I gripe and grumble over a few increased rates and always feel like there's a new fee to pay (this time, the worm test), I'm going to do it anyway. I'm just a penny pincher who's always comparing prices, but it's worth it if I can keep this happy (and weird) dog healthy. The staff is patient with my grumbles (although I STILL think the automated message should clarify the fecal test is an additional cost). To my relief, they do give pricing via email if asked. (Walmart's individual pricing is better than that affiliate relief program, which requires six Simparica Trio at a time.) Regardless, it's all needed! The staff is ALL professional, pleasant and friendly. Even though I sometimes consider going some place closer to home, I have yet to attempt to do so. I think my dog would drag me there anyway. P.S. I don't know why I'm so impressed by this, but my eyes lit up when the vet remembered my dog's adoption anniversary. While I expected her to remember my dog's birthday (from the charts), she seemed to recall this on her own. I was happy to tell a funny story about the second anniversary. I like that Dr. Henry is so attentive that way. Actually, I just like Dr. Henry overall once I was able to meet her in person when dog owners were allowed into the room. She's very cool.
