How to Save Money at Oakton Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was so impressed with the warm welcome my dog & I were accorded from all the staff . Being our first appointment for her vaccines they were so patient & reassuring towards her. I think we have finally found the right dr & staff to care for our difficult Frenchie.

Wonderful staff who really care. The veterinarian is outstanding. Pleasant waiting room. Very satisfied with everything and will continue to use their services even though they are quite a distance from my home.

Negative experience trying to schedule a new client appointment. I called at 10:00 am to schedule the visit, and gave them my contact information as I was told they would reach out to me once their systems were back up. I called back about 3:10 pm as I had not heard back. They explained they had a Friday appointment during the morning I needed to confirm I would be able to make it to. I asked if they could explain their cancellation policy just so I could save the appointment, and I was recommended to just call back as they require a deposit to book the appointment. I called back at 3:25 pm to book the appointment and was directed to an answering machine. I left a voicemail explaining that I was wanting to book the morning appointment on Friday. Their system also sent an auto text, to which I also responded my interest in booking the morning appointment. I was then able to call back just after 5:00 pm and was put on hold. After coming off hold, I was told the time I was trying to book was no longer available and the soonest they could schedule me wasn't for another two weeks out. I am a new dog parent, newly moved to the Elk Grove Village area. I wanted to be able to have my dog checked out sooner rather than later, and not have to drive 20-30 minutes out to another vet, as my dog is still adjusting to traveling in a car. This unfortunately was a very poor experience I have had with the team here so far. I see the glowing reviews they get, and do not doubt once you are in you get great service, but booking an appointment to even be seen is a mess.

We were so pleased with our first visit to Oakton Animal Hospital. Our primary vet unexpectedly retired so we relied on reviews of friends and family as well as Google reviews. We we not remotely disappointed. The staff was friendly and cheerful. My 55lb Doodle is very curious and boisterous and the team just rolled with it! From the front desk staff to our amazing vet tech, everyone was so warm and professional! And Dr Svoboda was excellent. She thoroughly reviewed the medical records I supplied and worked with me to find a more appropriate alternative to my pup’s heartguard medication. She even discovered our previous vet had not fully vaccinated our girl. Overall I could not have been more pleased! We know we are in good hands now!

We used to bring our dogs to Oakton Animal Hospital but have decided to change vets. Dr. Mary and the office staff were very kind however the male doctor there was not. When we first adopted one of our dogs he said “ Take him back or put him down, there is no hope for him. “ not the words you want to hear from a vet. We also went to an emergency vet who gave us a medication that we refilled at oakton. It was double the price for the exact same thing. They also told us our dog had a tumor in his ear which perhaps had shrank and gone away but our current vet said it doesn’t appear anything was there before. It’s hard to put faith in a doctor that you feel had lied to you. They are extremely expensive and in my opinion not worth the money when there are much better vets out there for a better price.
