How to Save Money at Elk Grove Veterinary Specialty & Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog Peter ate a corn cob whole. We took him to a emergency vet and the took xrays and said he needed surgery. They couldn't do it right then and there and said he was stable enough to come home and we can call to see if another place was able to do the surgery. I called elk grove and they said bring him in. We got there from the moment walking in to the time we left the staff was AMAZING. They got the corn cob out without surgery. I appreciate the staff and doing a non invasive way to get it out. Thank you

My husband and I recently took our dog to Elk Grove Animal Emergency Hospital for an emergency visit after he injured his paw. Our experience at this hospital was extremely disappointing. The doctor who examined our dog suggested antibiotics, but it turned out that they did not provide the antibiotics, instead they were only for inflammation and pain management, which was not properly communicated to us. In addition, the physical examination left some of our dog's other injuries untreated. When we requested a refund for the incomplete treatment, the management was hesitant and argued about the refund, claiming that they had done part of the treatment. While they did offer to bring our dog back in for a free consultation, we were not comfortable with the level of care he had received and did not want to return. Looking at all the reviews, it seems like everything revolves around the money they charge. This hospital is truly focused on profit over pet owners' satisfaction or providing proper treatment. It's clear that they don't care about resolving issues or offering refunds to pet owners who have had a bad experience. Overall, we would strongly advise pet owners to consider other options before choosing Elk Grove Animal Emergency Hospital for their pet's care. Our experience was a clear indication that this is not a hospital that truly cares about the well-being of animals or their owners.

I came in with my dog Yoda who is a 10-yo corgi due to her sudden change in behavior, a rock hard and bloated belly, visible discomfort and pain, and difficulty walking up and down inclines/stairs at home. Naturally as a dog mom I panicked and rushed to the clinic, calling them on my way to let them know I needed help for my baby. From the get go the front desk staff who took care of me on the phone approached me in the most therapeutic attitude and kept calm, taking down my information so we could save time when I get there. I was immediately placed in a private room and did not have to wait long to be seen by a technician, followed by the veterinarian on duty only a few minutes later. I was constantly updated about my dog's state throughout the entire time of the process including when I had to leave her in the clinic overnight. Not once did anyone express any annoyance due to my anxiety, and instead they provided me with reassurance and emotional support as well. My feelings were normalized and it helped to keep collected with the doctors' and staff's support. I want to emphasize and especially thank Dr. Culen who took care of Yoda last night and walked me through every step of the way with warmth, kindness, patience and comfort. She really took the time to explain Yoda's condition, her recommendations, the procedures and costs depending on treatment. The entire time she gave me her undivided attention and patience when I asked questions and was an emotional mess. She gave me time to make my decision about my dog's treatment. It is not often I encounter people that just radiate this calm energy when you interact with them and immediately make you feel like you can trust them. I also want to thank the kind, informative and engaging front desk staff that were very helpful in explaining the cost coverage options given that emergency care can be costly. It is understandable, and just like in any human ER if we walked in without insurance the costs would be similar, so don't expect to cheap out. It's your pet's health on the line- and there ARE options to help you financially, just ask. Thank you all for helping my baby. She is feeling much better as sleeping next to me as I write this!

Honestly if there was a way to leave negative stars I would 1000% do it. If I would have known this is the same place (just a different name now) that my father in law took his pet to where they REFUSED to do a biopsy to determine if it truly was a benign cyst or malignancy, I would have never come here with my pet- his dog passed away due to THEIR negligence to perform proper testing, and if you can't do the testing then let someone know where to go. From start to finish the way not only we as a family were treated but how our poor baby was treated is horrible. When you take your pet to the vet, no matter if it's a regular vet or emergency vet, you expect to be treated with the utmost respect and you expect your animals to be treated with respect and kindness. During discharge we were never told what to expect bringing our pet home either . How unprofessional. They are breed BIASED and suggested euthanasia because they didn't want to treat our pet due to their breed. It's disgusting. Thank GOD we have an amazing vet who actually cares for our pets. Our dog is going to be okay and does NOT need to be "put down" for an INFECTION. Do we put humans down for infections? No, we treat them accordingly . 10/100000 would not recommend.

Thursday, 1230am. Found my 10 yr old Husky in kitchen. Lethargic, could not lift his head and very unstable on his legs. 2 hours before, he was his normal, peppy self. Got to EGVS around 130am and he was immediately met w a stretcher as we carried him in. They examined him quickly and found out first he had a very high temperature. He spent the day/evening, with iv and antibiotics. Multiple tests run, but nothing was found, thank God. The doctor couldn't say exactly what is was but some type of infection. Thursday evening we went to vist and he was so much better! He was able to come home. Just like with human doctors, you might never find the cause of the sickness. The Doctors, receptionist and techs were great! Kept us informed. Thank you for helping our furbaby, Nikko.
