How to Save Money at Holistic Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Katz is A RARE GEM of a veterinarian!! Dr Katz and her entire team of beautiful ladies, are extremely professional, straightforward and caring to any/all of their patient’s needs. I came to her because my Great Dane was vaccine injured and NO vet in the Chicago area would help me treat him. When I initially reached out to her, I was desperate. She responded to me promptly and genuinely, showing her willingness to comprehend my dogs health situation and give me remedies and possible solutions to his problems. A lot of her treatments were trial and error, and I appreciate her willingness to try and learn from each experience. She has helped me successfully treated my Dane’s skin/allergy problems, which were due to his compromised immune system and gave me the appropriate holistic remedies to aid in the rebalancing of his immune system. I have since brought two more of my animals (kittens ) to her for treatment, check ups, blood tests and even neuter procedures. I can attest to how well Dr Katz and her team care deeply for their patients. I willingly travel over an hour to and from her clinic because I know that my pets will receive “top of the line” care. It is SOOOO hard to find a veterinarian that is this skilled and educated, while still respecting my own personal views and decisions regarding the health of my pets. I cherish her as a veterinarian, her honesty, and her willingness to comprehend and do her best to achieve the most beneficial outcome for my fur babies. From my personal experience, Dr Katz and team is very very highly recommended.

Dr. Katz and her staff make both my dog and myself welcome and feel better just be there. Also, Dr. Katz would reply my emails even if I send it over the weekend. I’m so glad that they are always there for me and my dog.

Distressing experience. Brought my elder pup here for a consult regarding mobility issues and chronic pain. Exam room was a plain slippery tile floor with no kind of exam table, floor mat, or padding for my dog to sit or stand on so he was stuck laying on this floor not able to get up. Dr. Katz entered the appointment seemingly rushed / frazzled. She was not interested in listening to my input; she talked over me and repeatedly interrupted me when I was explaining his diet / medication regimen / etc.. to shut me down and tell me that basically everything I am doing is wrong. She decided to do an acupuncture treatment. We’ve never tried acupuncture, so I didn’t know what to expect, but as she jammed the needles into him I felt like maybe her technique was a bit aggressive. She turned the lights off and left the room and my dog screamed for 15 minutes. Nobody intervened to stop the treatment or check and see if he was ok … I had no idea if this was normal (I’ve come to find out that it is not). The bill was outrageous – I called in advance of the appointment to verify the costs and when I had to pay nothing was charged as quoted. I was told that the person who quoted me over the phone was probably new. Following the appointment, my dog was in worse condition than when we went in – either pain from the acupuncture or stress from the visit. I was so stressed out from the trauma he went through that it took me days to forgive myself for taking him there; and for burning hundreds of dollars to torture my dog. The ladies at the front counter were very sweet though.

Caring, works in partnership with pet parents, willing to try different things, knowledgeable about animals. I truly feel heard and taken care of by this practice. I first came to Dr Katz for my cat diagnosed with IBD. I did not want him on traditional medications to treat only the symptoms. Every drug has a side effect which equals more medication. He wasn't even a year old yet and had lost so much weight. Dr Katz has worked with me and heard me when I said I thought it was something in processing food that was causing this. Preservatives perhaps? Being not a nutritionist, she made sure he was stable as I worked out a recipe for him. With her guidance and support he has gained weight. No more vomiting. No diarrhea. I most like that this practice takes a whole being approach. No throwing drugs at symptoms. They look for the cause of the distress. They are truly caring. If you have an animal diagnosed with IBD you can understand how stressful it can be worrying constantly. I immediately felt at ease with everyone there. I highly recommend them.
