How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This location is the worst Banfield I’ve been to. You call to make an appointment or try to get advice for a pet concern, you get their voicemail and NO ONE calls you back. Ever. The customer service is lack luster and they still don’t do in person exams just drop offs. I’d like to be with my dog and actually speak with a vet. Bare minimum expectations. I’ve been to other Banfield locations and don’t experience this same lack of care or poor business practices.

The medicine is way too overpriced. A location I used to go to always gave me a prescription and told me to fill it at any human pharmacy. But at this location, they charged me $50 for a 30 day supply of trazodone. When it usually just costs $17 at CVS. If they give you a prescription for human medicine, have them just write you one and fill it somewhere else. They will overcharge you for basic generic meds. I wish that they told me the price before they filled it. I would’ve saved me over $30.

I brought my dog to Banfield since I've had her. Going on 14 years now. I love them. They're nearly identical and every state that I've lived.

Wish I could Cancel my plan now !! This SPECIFIC HOSPITAL is a mess seriously .. I caught a flat on my way to the hospital and was going to arrive 15 minutes late and they weren’t even able to accommodate me in which I shouldn’t even have to come to the appointment with my dog but they lied and says he tried to bite them in which I know he didn’t because my dog doesn’t bite they’re probably just lazy and didn’t want to do their job! I can’t wait until this membership ends I’ll be reporting to the BBB! My dog has been coming since he was a puppy and never had any problems with being given vaccinations

When we first started going here with our Dog in 2017 it was convenient and cost effective with caring and competent staff. Unfortunately that has all gone by the wayside and I’m simply counting the days until our plan for our dog is up. Banfield is a CASH GRAB they push unnecessary sales on you deemed as pet care (paraphrased by former staff) and then when you actually try to get your fur baby some care they leave you up the creek with nothing. We had a scheduled drop off (because Banfield never does in room exams God Forbid since 2020) for 730am this morning to look at a paw he’s been incessantly licking at and my wife who woke up earlier than needed solely to get him there on time and taken care of was met with nothing and no one. Zero Banfield staff at all! She got in Petsmart, circled the store inside with our scared shaking pup 3x, and again not one Banfield staff member. The manager on duty of Petsmart called all Banfield extensions and assured her (wife) no one was there and did not know when anyone from Banfield would be coming in. Now, my wife was late to work and our dog is not getting his medical need addressed it’s no wonder they’ve unfortunately lost vet after vet (we’ve already been through 2 who we loved who one day were up and gone … which we now know why) and staff after staff there. It is infuriating to pay the monthly fees we do on top of cost when they actually see him all for inconsistent inconvenient care. It is extremely unprofessional and a waste of time, effort, energy and finances. If you’re thinking of getting Banfield for your pet DO NOT you’re far better off putting what you'd pay towards them in a pet fund to just use out of pocket or go with an actual legitimate pet insurance company.
