How to Save Money at Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff were so very friendly and helpful. They told me everything they were going to do before they did it and then they updated me on how everything went afterwards. If things don’t go as planned, they tell me how they will still make it happen and then carry out that plan. I’ve never felt more secure about my animals’ health!

I have been taking my pets to horseshoe lake since 2019, all experiences have been fine but I’ve never thought it was exceptional by any means, I’ve stuck through it with them as they have had lots of turnover with vets leaving, different vet techs constantly all that because it was easy to go back to the same place. I’ve always thought they were a little more on the expensive side but man… their prices have really gotten out of hand and are not comparable nor competitive with different vets in the area. It is going to be time for my animals and I to move on to somewhere different.

Need a wonderful groomer? Jennifer at Horsehoe Lake Animal Hospital is your go-to! Besides being the best groomer Sammy & Bogey have ever had, she is just this positive, upbeat, wonderful, spirited soul. She listens to what style you want for your pooch and always brings it. They walk out prancing because they smell wonderful and look like a million bucks.

If you're looking for a vet office that cares more about money than the care of your animals, then this is the place. First instance: I was quoted a price for surgery and scheduled it. After I showed up for the surgery check-in, I was told it would be almost twice the price quoted since the doctor they scheduled it with does open surgery instead of laproscopic. No one bothered to let me know before I showed up. Next instance: I took my puppies there to get their stitches out after being fixed. They weighed them and both were close but still under the weight cutoff for their monthly meds, so I asked the vet tech multiple times if we needed to go up to the next weight range since they're close to the cutoff and she kept saying no, keep them on the current weight range for this month, but when Chewy contacted them for approval, the vet denied it and said they need to be on the next weight range. Latest instance: my dog has worms that are very visible in the stool, but they won't treat him until after they send it away and get the results back, just in case he needs meds for something else also. I'm already there with my dog, but I have to wait a couple of days for the results to come back to see if he also needs other meds. This is ridiculous. Meanwhile, I now have to hope my other dogs don't get worms from him while I wait for the results to come back. They're WAY overpriced and will take your money in a heartbeat, but they really don't care about your animals. Money hungry with poor care!

Horseshoe lake is the only place for compassionate and loving care. Even during the pandemic they took care of the four legged kids. Munchie does slip his boys the occasional chippie or French fry but our critters are healthy and well.
