How to Save Money at Animal Emergency Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Was told I can't come back here again because I started crying when the nurse said I couldn't be with my cat while he was being put to sleep. She claimed I "yelled" when I started crying and saying I will bring him for treatment when I get more money. Then proceeds to keep raising her voice yelling to me from the passenger side of my truck that I can't come back again and that I'm disrespectful I don't know what she went on for but yelling across my truck while I'm visibly crying/upset. Just before anyone brings their business this is how they treat someone who is already upset from their beloved pet being ill.

Don't get me wrong... as a canine lover, I feel fortunate to have an animal hospital in such close proximity. They seem to care about the work they do. The dr. and her team recommended treatment and we agreed. However; after following up with our Vet as recommended, they were surprised at the 'fix' made at the hospital. A dislocated shoulder on the front leg had a hard splint style cast to brace the injury after they popped it back into place. The problem was the splint did not support the dislocated shoulder. It only added additional weight to the leg, making it more difficult for him to walk. The vet actually laughed about the whole concept of how the brace was put on our dog. Needless to say, I'm very grateful for services offered 24/7 we arrived there at 10pm and the fine folks took care of my beloved dog. But $2000 dollars later, this one hurt me. I was also charged and given a 'cone of shame' and, in my foggy state of panic, didn't realize they provided it until two days later. It was an unnecessary item. I had two at home already. Can't take it back, so that was money wasted. Lastly, it's July, 2023. We were informed on the phone while heading to the hospital that no one could come in the facility except the patient/canine. Why? It is then when your companion and you need the comfort of being in each other's presence. It was disappointing but I respected their wishes. It made for a tense evening. All in all, it's great to have an emergency facility when you need it. The staff are caring. But when you go, ask lots of questions. Oh yeah, and don't forget to bring your checkbook.

Do not take your pet here unless you want to wait HOURS WITH NO UPDATES. I would rather drive anywhere in Missouri for overnight emergency care. This place only has one vet working per night with 20 to 30 patients, on average. You wait HOURS simply because they do not have staff. Our 4 pound dog got medicine for an allergic reaction and we waited hours after the swelling was down simply because the vet " didn't have time" to discharge him.

My dog had passed away in a Friday afternoon... And, the staff was very, very sincere and kind to help us out on a busy Friday evening. I would definitely be back! ❤️D

I was a bit nervous about going here for my cat’s treatment due to several bad reviews, but my experience with them was great. They are a no-contact clinic, so yes, you will either have to wait in your car or you can leave and come back. The veterinarian called me and spoke to me in detail about the care plan, and I was provided with an itemized list of charges before paying, so I knew up front what the likely cost was. The cost to be seen was $149 which was explained before agreeing to treatment. They appeared to be extremely busy and it took them about 6 hours from drop-off to pick-up which is normal for any ER.
