How to Save Money at GoodVets West Loop

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am writing this as my angel, my 1 year old cat Mouse who I raised alone from 8 weeks, left this world last night due to this clinic lacking basic medical standards. I brought Mouse in for his yearly check up and he was not feeling well. He was emaciated, lost a good portion of his weight, and had a dull and unkempt coat. Any competent veterinarian would see this cat is very ill, but said verbatim “oh he seems a bit under the weather”. I specifically told them I was worried about anemia, and they took his blood while he was dehydrated which gave “borderline results” when he was actually moderately anemic. The ER confirmed to me that this was not true even with me asking GV staff for reassurance twice. Despite his visible sickness, they administered a 3 year FVRCP vaccine, which led to his extremely painful death via AKI. You NEVER vaccinate a sick cat, and once again they were surprised he got vaccinated at the ER. This resulted in a massive immune response in his struggling body. They also ignored the elevated eosinophils in his bloodwork and the vets neglected to tell me about it, and me + ER staff only found out after we both requested his labs. Elevated eosinophils is a clear sign of major immune disorder, inflammation, or another serious medical issue and they never bothered to say anything to me regarding this. When I brought him back on Saturday for being nauseous and throwing up and severely dehydrated they ran a $300 GI panel and sent us on our way. Additionally, their negligence is documented in their own records. On 1/6, they recorded Mouse as a 2/9 BCS (emaciated). Even though they acknowledged he was starving and skeletal, they administered a 3 year FVRCP vaccine that same day. Then, on 1/10, (Saturday) as he was dying from the resulting immune crash, they pencil whipped his chart to claim he was a 4/9 (ideal weight). This appears to be a falsification of medical records to cover up the fact that they vaccinated a cat they knew was in a state of physical collapse. On Sunday I HAD to be the one to advocate for him and request a technician visit for SubQ fluids and Cerenia rather than them recommend these basic options of care for his condition. They prescribed GI food when in reality his kidneys were failing due to medical negligence. They drained me of $1,500 as a college student for useless diagnostic talk while my baby’s organs shut down and he suffered. The ultimate insult was when Dr. Creger called me last night to ask me to come in for “further diagnostics” (MORE MONEY) at the exact moment I was at the ER holding my crying cat who was in severe pain in the room where he was being euthanized. They treated Mouse as a paycheck rather than a small living creature. Because of their negligence, my cat died in agonizing pain, his last conscious breath being him loudly crying as his kidneys gave out. I watched the light leave his eyes when they didn’t have to that day. I have all of his medical records from this clinic on hand and I will file a formal complaint with the state board. These failures cost an innocent, very young animal his life. Mouse deserved better than this and I will ensure they are held accountable. If you have any love for your animals, do not trust these people. They will watch your animal die while you swipe your card. UPDATE 1/14: Since posting this, Dr. Creger contacted me via email. Rather than addressing the fact that they vaccinated a visibly sick cat or explaining the weight discrepancy in his chart, they are now attempting to shift the blame onto the vaccine manufacturer Zoetis by “opening a case” not even 48 hours after his passing.

Six years ago, it was a vet at GoodVets West Loop, Dr. Grace Chen, who saved my dog’s life and my sanity, by identifying the cause of his long-suffering GI system: chronic pancreatitis. Trooper, who at that point was already nine, lived for six more happy years, walking miles per day with absolute joy on his face until the very end of his life. Sadly, shortly after we moved back to Chicago, that moment came. When I struggled to get a regular vet to help us navigate what I now know was liver cancer, GoodVets stepped up again. Unfortunately for Trooper, his cancer was very aggressive and I ended up only having days with him once we got the diagnosis. It’s brutal for a vet team to be re-introduced to an animal when they’re already dying. It’s also awkward: they don’t know me or my animal and yet are asked to help steer through an end-of-life process that is painful for them, my dog, and for me. The GoodVets team handled this assignment so gracefully, helping me prioritize Trooper’s health and comfort in a way I thought respectful. The time came to say goodbye to Trooper a few days ago. There’s no way around it: this moment is devastating. However, they handled it with professionalism, compassion and frank language about the process. Trooper came home today, and I was really impressed with the memorialization they did. It’s a brutal part of the job, I’m sure, but they handled it with love and grace. Thank you, GoodVets, for really living up to the name. You gave my boy so many good years, and when the time came, you stepped up for us again. This is by far the worst part of the journey of dog ownership. I’m so grateful, though, for all the loving, happy memories we had because of you, and the care you showed when our time ended. Neither of our lives would’ve been the same without what you did for him.

I rarely write reviews, but my experience with GoodVets West Loop has been deeply upsetting and disappointing. Before my kitten Prea’s spay surgery, they specifically asked us for our consent to remove any retained baby teeth during the procedure, and we said yes. Despite that, they did not remove the tooth — and never gave us any explanation. Weeks later, one of Prea’s baby canines began breaking apart until it became infected. We brought her back to the clinic, where they confirmed the infection and prescribed antibiotics and painkillers. They told us they would speak with the surgeon and follow up the next day with an explanation and a solution. That follow-up never came. I emailed them — no reply. Days passed. Only after sending a second message threatening legal action did they finally respond. They did cover the cost of the infected tooth consultation, and after the legal threat, they refunded the medications. But by that point, I had already gone to another vet for a second opinion. Prea had to be sedated again for dental X-rays, where we discovered that her adult canine was trapped under her gum — something that could have been completely avoided if the baby tooth had been removed during the spay, as they themselves asked permission to do. Now, due to their negligence and lack of professionalism, Prea has to undergo a second surgery to extract the retained adult tooth. What angers me most isn’t the initial mistake — I know things can go wrong. What I can’t accept is the total lack of communication, empathy, and accountability that followed. No apology. No ownership. No concern for my cat’s pain or the stress this caused us. This experience left me feeling angry, disappointed, and betrayed. We trusted them with our kitten’s care, and they failed us when it mattered most. I do not recommend this clinic. Their handling of this case revealed a serious lack of compassion and professional integrity.

I really appreciated the online appointment set up which took less than 5 minutes to register. We received a kind welcome from the ladies at the front desk and the Vet was very informative, responsive and respectful with our pups boundaries when performing his exam. Her vet tech was also very kind and helpful throughout the process, he and she explained the summary of our visit well and provided good instructions at the end of our visit. This place was fast in the care of my dog and provided their best advice on the steps we could take to help him get better! Thank you, to everyone at the GoodVet!

The whole staff is just wonderful. I brought in our new kitten who was a stray back in March. He was so tiny and weak. Well, 6 months later thanks to the advice and care we have received, he has gained 6 pounds, is bright eyed, strong, and active. No trace of any ear mites or anything else. GoodVets is always there for us, and everyone there is so gentle and loving with him. They make him comfortable and less scared of going to the doctor!
