How to Save Money at Abell Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can’t say enough great things about Abell Animal Hospital! The staff is absolutely wonderful—friendly, compassionate, and genuinely caring with every visit. The clinic itself is spotless and very well-maintained, which immediately makes you feel comfortable and confident in the care they provide. Most importantly, my pets always leave happy and healthy, which means the world to me. I’m so grateful for the level of attention and love they show to every animal. Highly recommend!

Both of my dogs, Milo and Zaya, have been coming here for four or so years. The techs and doctors are always amazing. Zaya was in this morning for a blood draw, and it’s so nice to see her so happy with the techs since she’s normally a reactive dog. The dogs are always so at ease there and it’s wonderful. They even gave us a little Christmas stocking as a treat after her visit!

We trust Abell to give great care to our very complex case cat! Newman, our elderly Siamese, has undergone an abundance of medical procedures and treatments in his past and they are adept in monitoring his blood work, altering medications as needed, and communicating with our out of state specialist/internist and coordinating the best care possible. My family has been bringing pets to Abell for many, many years and they are an asset to the Norwood Park community!

Everyone at Abell is wonderful! The front desk, every technician and every Vet we have seen has been so kind and compassionate to our very nervous Lab mix. Thank you for the best care we could ask for! Bree appreciates you all as well. 🐾

I’ve had many different vets over the years, but Dr. Singh at Abel Animal Hospital is by far the most thorough, compassionate, and caring…for both pets and their owners. His attention to detail and commitment to finding the root of a problem, rather than just treating symptoms, is something rare in a doctor these days. I originally went to him for a BOAS surgery consult for my microbully, Lucy. I expected him to focus only on that, but he did a full, incredibly thorough exam and identified multiple issues I wasn’t fully aware of. And we left with a complete plan for her care. Dr. Singh performed Lucy’s BOAS surgery using a laser instead of a scalpel, which made healing so much faster. The results were amazing…he opened her nares and removed a significant amount of excess soft palate tissue from the back of her throat. He also runs full lab work, testing, and an EKG before surgery to ensure pets are safe for anesthesia. Lucy also has chronic nail splits and a persistent bacterial infection, and Dr. Singh has been working with me to get both under control. He also recommended a diet change after noticing food sensitivities, and now (except for her paws) her skin looks fantastic. He’s taken what felt like a daunting, hopeless situation and broken it into small, manageable steps that actually work. The staff is equally wonderful…friendly, caring, and attentive. Once, when I forgot my phone charger, a staff member brought me her personal charger to use. Another time, when Lucy’s temperature spiked from stress, they rushed in with fans, ice packs, and cold towels, staying with us until she was calm. I have so many stories like this, and I’ve only been going there a few months. I truly cannot give this office enough stars. I’m so grateful to have found Dr. Singh and his team, and I will never take my animals anywhere else. Very highly recommend! **the first three photos are before Lucy’s surgery, and the last three photos were taken three days after surgery.
