How to Save Money at Animal Medical Center of Chicago

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We’ve had such a great experience with this vet for our (almost) 13-week-old golden retriever, Vern! Scheduling is super easy, and we’ve never had an issue getting an appointment. I also love their texting system, so helpful when you need a quick answer about scheduling etc. We see Dr. England, and seriously love him. He’s super personable, great with Vern, and always asks good questions to make sure he really understands what’s going on. The vet techs are all amazing too :) they’re always so sweet and seem so excited to see Vern, which makes every visit feel really positive. Highly recommend!

Dr Janik and the Animal Medical Center team were extremely helpful, responsive, and caring while we worked to figure out my dog’s diagnosis and treatment plan. I have never once felt that unnecessary procedures, products, or tests were being pushed on me here. I would recommend this clinic to anyone needing veterinary care in Chicago. I wish I could give more than 5 stars.

I love the Animal Medical Center of Chicago! They take such amazing care of our two dogs. The staff is so responsive, caring, and knowledgeable and the doctors are amazing. It is definitely pricier than other vets I first tried when I moved to Chicago. But it is 100% worth it for me. You are able to reach someone when you call (LOVE the front desk staff and practice manager), you can schedule emergency and non emergency appointments in the near future, the doctors spend time with you and are not rushed and answer all of your questions, and you can text pictures and messages and get responses back quickly in between visits or as follow ups to visits, medication onsite, etc. etc. When my dog was attacked by another dog at daycare, they squeezed her in for surgery immediately and did such an incredible job with her care ❤️

***UPDATE: I was initially told the exam fee could be waived, but that offer was reversed after the owner, Dr. Solomon, declined to approve it. Choosing revenue over timely comfort for pets with a well-documented chronic history is unacceptable and speaks volumes about how clients are treated.*** I’ve been coming here for years and in the past this clinic felt like a true neighborhood, family style vet. Unfortunately, that has changed. I recently requested a simple prescription refill for an ear ointment my dogs have been on for three to four years for routine maintenance. Despite the fact that my dogs had their annual exam and were seen in July 2025, well within the 12 month window, Dr. Behnke refused to refill the prescription without another exam. I explained that this is not a new medication and that I cannot justify an additional $200 exam fee solely to refill a long standing prescription. I was told that if their ears were getting bad, I should bring them in, which would result in the additional charges on top of the medication. What was most frustrating was the lack of consideration for my dogs’ comfort over the weekend. This is an ointment that has been prescribed many times before, not a new or controlled medication. It’s disappointing that a situation as simple as a routine prescription refill is what will likely end a long term relationship with a veterinarian I once trusted.

Our dog LOVES it here!! I’ve never seen a dog so happy and pull so hard, excited to come in for her appointments. Her appointments are usually with Dr England and Dr Simpson, both who take great care of her! The front desk staff are super sweet and love the capability to even text questions to the clinic.
