How to Save Money at Loyal Companions

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had our first visit to Loyal Companions recently and it was awesome! My dog is always nervous but they did well this visit due to the facility being a fear free environment. Very impressed with the staff and Dr. and will continue to take my pet there.

We have had many pets over the years & seen several vets in all parts of the country. Loyal Companions is like no other & has set the bar forever high.! Our pets get wonderful care and they actually look forward to going to the vet. We really appreciate the fear-free set up and philosophy which works so well for our reactive or nervous pets. In addition, we will always be grateful for the sensitivity and empathy these wonderful vets and staff have shared when it’s been time to say goodbye to our furry family members. Thank you, Loyal Companions for showing us how it can be done!

Our 2 year old rescue has fears that we need help working with. After a traumatic experience (for our dog and his people) we tried Loyal Companions. We are amazed. Their entire set up is geared towards reducing pet and owner anxiety. Our Archie was immediately greeted by name by Maria. With treats in hand she took him into his room with a comphy dog bed. All during this initial interview he got treats, pets and praise. When our new vet, Dr Petsche came into the room absolutely nothing was done that scared our dog. She examined him while talking to him and sitting with him on the low dog bed. High value treats were given by Dr Petsche and Maria. We have never felt so comfortable and not rushed at all. Ultimately we will be coming back for his immunization. We were given a special muzzle, instructions for positive training and many useful articles. Today was day 1 of his muzzle training. We had the benefit of a video and step by step instructions. So far so good. Treats galore when that muzzle comes out. Please give this very specialized practice a try. You will not be sorry. Archie and his people are very grateful!

Loyal Companions is an AMAZING practice that I highly recommend to any pet parent!! My husband and I have two rescue dogs that have been treated by the doctors and techs at Loyal Companions. We moved to Saint Charles in 2019 and transitioned the care of our first dog to Loyal Companions within a month because he had a bad episode of vomiting. Dr. Wahlund and Nancy provided such kind, compassionate care. We were so impressed by the layout of the facility (separate entrances for dogs and cats, no waiting room - right to an exam room, scale set into the floor) and cleanliness and comfort of the rooms (chairs for humans, comfy covered ottoman up against a big window for the pups). We were given a range of treatment options for our dog with prices and were treated respectfully as we made the decision that we felt was best for our dog and our budget! Recently, we adopted our foster dog. He had a terrible experience with the vet we had to use while we were fostering him and were thrilled to bring him to Loyal Companions as soon as he was officially adopted. Our new dog went from an animal who had to be heavily sedated from growling and lunging at staff in the previous vet office to a dog who laid calmly and allowed the entire exam to happen without a single sign of stress with Dr. Petsche and Tash. I can't begin to explain our relief! The staff here take their time and never make you feel rushed in the office or on the phone. I feel like this practice caters to us "crazy pet parents" who treat our animals as if they are our children. They use a variety of methods to keep visits "fear free" from anxiety medication to calming caps to high reward treats. Thank you, Loyal Companions!!

My dog is terrified of the vet because of a past experience- he is safe and calm with Loyal Companions. The staff is committed to quality care. They found ways to be friendly even during the pandemic.
