How to Save Money at Monarch Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Charlie has been my dog Lulu's vet since I adopted her in 2014. She has a tendency to get nervous while visiting the vet, but Dr. Charlie has a very calming presence and makes her feel comfortable quite easily. His kindness, and thorough care at every visit, shows me the dedication that he has to her quality of care and her overall happiness. I trust him 100% with my small girl and am happy to call him her doctor. I am so glad that he has started his own practice. The staff is amazing and so is he!

We saw Dr. Benson first at his old position and were greatly disappointed when we heard he moved on. When we saw another doctor at this establishment it just wasn’t the same. My partner googled his name and we were thrilled to see he had started his own practice! We made an appointment shortly after at Monarch and couldn’t have had a better experience! His office is gorgeous and his staff were the friendliest and welcoming we’ve ever seen. Dr. Benson’s professional but extremely warm and approachable down to Earth nature make even the toughest questions/situations in regards to our aging ferret Noodle much easier to deal with. Also while not the primary concern, their prices were extremely reasonable. Needless to say we won’t be going anywhere else in the future!

I use to see Dr.Benson around 3-4 years ago, needless to say it was so refreshing to see a compassionate kind vet who treats my animals gently! The new facility is amazing and makes me feel right at home. I was very thrilled to see their bearded dragon had great husbandry too! It's a great sign walking into a facility and seeing how they take care of their companion animals in a wonderful way :)

Dr. Benson has been our vet for a few years now. We were so sad when he left his previous position, so when he and his wife Dr. Andrea Benson opened Monarch, we decided to come out to St. Charles for our cavalier to continue under his care. Dr. B is warm and personable, and we wholeheartedly trust his advice. I like that when possible he offers a few treatment plan options with no pressure. He’s thorough and takes the time to answer any questions or concerns. In the past, our two senior cats also saw Dr. Benson. When it was time for one of them to unexpectedly pass, we truly appreciated that he was able to fit us in that day. The new clinic is clean and beautiful. Both the vet assistant and the front desk staff were welcoming and helpful. We wish the Bensons and staff all the best with Monarch!

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Benson. He is not only an incredibly skilled veterinarian but also one of the most compassionate and attentive professionals I’ve ever met. He takes the time to truly listen, explains everything clearly, and treats every pet like they’re his own. You can tell he genuinely cares—not just about the animals, but about the people who love them too. I’m so excited to see him start his own practice, and I know he’ll build something amazing. If you're looking for a vet who combines knowledge, kindness, and true dedication, look no further.
